Now Her Legacy Is Saving Survivors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Rolling Stone<br \/>\n<\/em>By Lorena O&#8217;Neil<br \/>\n<em>May 25, 2023<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Excerpt:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \"><span class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-012\">RUTH GLENN REMEMBERS<\/span>\u00a0the first time she read\u00a0<em>I, Tina,<\/em>\u00a0the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/feature\/tina-turner-queen-of-rock-roll-190581\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0powerful 1986 autobiography\u00a0<\/a>in which\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_tina-turner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/tina-turner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-tag=\"tina-turner\">Tina Turner<\/a>\u00a0details the extensive abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband, Ike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">Glenn, who read the book when it was first published, was \u201cmoved and encouraged\u201d by Tina\u2019s personal accounts; they were particularly momentous because it was at a time when \u201cwe weren\u2019t even talking about\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_domestic-violence\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/domestic-violence\/\" data-tag=\"domestic-violence\">domestic violence<\/a>\u00a0yet.\u201d In the 1980s, this wasn\u2019t something celebrities \u2014 or, really, much of anyone \u2014 discussed publicly. People didn\u2019t have \u201cthe right words\u201d or language to describe it. \u201cHere\u2019s this icon saying: It\u2019s okay to talk about this,\u201d says Glenn. \u201cShe broke that barrier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">Glenn also recalls thinking, \u201cIf this can happen to this beautiful, strong, wonderful Black woman who has all of these things going on for her, it could happen to any of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">Six years later, Glenn would leave her own abusive marriage. Fifteen years after\u00a0<em>I, Tina\u00a0<\/em>became\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1986\/10\/12\/books\/best-seller-october-12-1986.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a national bestseller<\/a>, Glenn would read the book again, when it was taught as part of a\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_domestic-abuse\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/domestic-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-tag=\"domestic-abuse\">domestic abuse<\/a> course she took at the University of Colorado.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-9326027_26=\"148145\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-9326027_26=\"148145\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-9326027_26=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-9326027_26=\"1\">The professor taught the students that Turner\u2019s book was \u201coutlining the domestic violence 101 dynamics,\u201d says Glenn, who is now CEO and president of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncadv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Coalition Against Domestic Violence<\/a>. In addition to the extreme physical abuse she endured, Turner spoke about Ike\u2019s need to control her, his manipulation, and his financial abuse, a controlling tactic that is very common but not often discussed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">Tina left her husband and manager Ike Turner in 1976 after he repeatedly punched her while traveling from the Dallas airport to their hotel during their tour. In her book, Tina wrote that she looked at a sleeping Ike just before she fled and thought, \u201cYou just beat me for the last time, you sucker.\u201d She put on sunglasses to disguise her black eyes and ran across several lanes of traffic on a highway, nearly getting hit by a truck. While she only had 36 cents in her pocket, she convinced the white hotel clerk to give her a room at the Ramada Inn, before eventually fleeing to Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">At a time when abuse survivors were still being called \u201cbattered wives,\u201d and their experiences swept under the rug or treated as private matters to be handled at home, Tina Turner was boldly and courageously depicting how horrendous living with abuse was, with her unflinching honesty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">Beginning with a 1981 interview in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tag\/tina-turner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>People<\/em>\u00a0magazine<\/a>, Turner revealed her experiences suffering from domestic abuse in her 16-year-marriage to Ike. She would go on to detail horrifying allegations of abuse in countless interviews and two memoirs, as well as a documentary released in 2021. She reported incidents of Ike burning her with coffee, beating her with shoes and hangers, raping her and breaking her jaw and nose before they took the stage and performed together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">Glenn tears up as she talks about reading Tina\u2019s book. \u201cI will never forget the image I had in my head of her running across the highway, bleeding, being strong and saying \u2018I have got to do this.\u2019 To be Tina Turner, with pocket change, saying \u2018Enough.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">\u201cShe left a legacy in as much her music as being a survivor and speaking out,\u201d adds Glenn, who recently published\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Everything-I-Never-Dreamed\/Ruth-M-Glenn\/9781982196004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">her own memoir<\/a> detailing her abusive marriage. \u201cA Black woman survivor speaking out \u2014 and even the challenges that she had after that as a Black woman and a survivor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">Part of why Tina went public with the abuse is that the music industry was having a tough time understanding why she was starting her own solo career. \u201cI wanted to stop people from thinking that Ike and Tina was so positive, that we were such a great team,\u201d Tina recounted in her 2021\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/tina-turner-documentary-review-hbo-1145792\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HBO documentary<\/a>. \u201cSo I thought, if nothing else, at least people know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">After her divorce, Turner cleaned houses and would perform her former hits as cabaret acts in Las Vegas, until she released her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/private-dancer-204642\/\">breakout solo album<\/a>,\u00a0<em>Private Dancer<\/em>, in 1984. She won three Grammys, and her career took off. Meanwhile, she continued to talk about her experience leaving her abusive marriage in blockbuster interviews with Oprah and Gayle King. Her autobiography was turned into a 1993 movie\u00a0<em>What\u2019s Love Got to Do With It<\/em>\u00a0starring Angela Bassett. (\u201cHow do we say farewell to a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world?\u201d Bassett said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CspAWdOSRG0\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in a statement<\/a>\u00a0after Turner\u2019s death. \u201cTina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion, and freedom should look like.\u201d)<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules a-span1 lrv-u-padding-b-1 u-padding-b-175@desktop-xl lrv-u-padding-t-025 u-overflow-hidden u-border-color-brand-primary u-border-tb-5 lrv-u-padding-b-075@mobile-max\"><\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">For Black women in Turner\u2019s generation, she was \u201ca person they could look up to, to lead them out of their situation,\u201d says Alana Brown, executive director for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/safesisterscircle.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Safe Sisters Circle<\/a>, which provides culturally-specific services to Black survivors. She says that there\u2019s a cultural stigma against speaking out about abuse and that because of this some survivors aren\u2019t even aware they are being domestically abused and sexually abused at the same time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">\u201cThe fact that she came out publicly is a big deal, it made people not feel alone,\u201d says Brown. This is crucial, she notes, when one takes into account that Black women are more likely to be affected by domestic abuse and sexual assault, and women of color are more likely to be killed by their abusive partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">\u201cSurvivors sometimes blame themselves,\u201d says <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/get-informed\/senior-leadership-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maureen Curtis, vice president of criminal justice programs at\u00a0Safe Horizon<\/a><\/strong>, the largest victim services agency in the country \u2014 which is why it is so impactful to hear from other survivors who have safely left their abusers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">\u201cParticularly somebody like Tina Turner who is successful, powerful, beautiful and can speak out,\u201d says Curtis. \u201cShe has made a world of difference to so many survivors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">Curtis recalls Turner\u2019s interviews played at a conference for domestic abuse advocates and survivors a few years ago. She says it\u2019s also important not only for survivors to hear other survivors\u2019 stories, but also for first responders such as police. \u201cThe more famous they are, the more impact they can have,\u201d says Curtis. \u201cShe definitely had a major impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">And Turner\u2019s legacy as a survivor is not limited to those who grew up with her songs at the top of the charts. On Tuesday, a day before Turner\u2019s death, Glenn was looking at the #domesticviolenceawareness tag on TikTok when she stumbled upon an interview where Tina talks about Ike breaking her nose before a performance: \u201cI had put everything on hold because it was an existence of children being involved, debts [\u2026] Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.\u201d The video clip ends with Tina advising survivors not to go back to their abusers and in the comments, there are TikTok users saying that the singer inspired them to leave their abusive partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">Four decades after reading Tina\u2019s account of running across the highway, Glenn was once again seeing the singer\u2019s influence on conversations around domestic abuse, this time in front of an entirely new generation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \">\u201cI wasn\u2019t just running away from Ike,\u201d Tina wrote in her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/best-music-books-2018-beastie-boys-tina-turner-770209\/\">second memoir,\u00a0<em>My Love Story<\/em>.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI was running towards a new life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-l \"><em>If you are currently experiencing domestic violence and are seeking help, you can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE or text \u201cSTART\u201d to 88788.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/tina-turner-ike-domestic-abuse-survivors-1234741396\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Read the original article here.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tina Turner&#8217;s legacy as a domestic violence survivor has made other abuse survivors feel seen.
