She connects them to our Domestic Violence Hotline to help them get emotional support and access Safe Horizon\u2019s other services. To help her clients remember the hotline number, <a href=\"tel:+18006214673\">1-800-621-4673<\/a>, Johane teaches them to think of the date June 21st that stands for 621 and HOPE for 4673.<\/p>\n<h2>Experiencing Domestic Violence<\/h2>\n<p>Although Johane works with clients impacted by domestic violence every day, she didn\u2019t recognize the signs of escalating domestic violence in her own relationship &#8211; her husband was verbally and emotionally abusive. Johane coped with the abuse by going to work. <em>\u201cWork was my refuge. I worked to cope and to take care of my family.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over time, Johane\u2019s husband began to drink heavily and eventually quit his job. When Johane found out that her husband was cheating on her, she filed for divorce.<\/p>\n<p>While separated, the violence escalated. One day, as she and her cousin were leaving the gym, Johane\u2019s husband aggressively approached her. He had contacted her earlier that day demanding they talk. She was scared and trying to call the police when he hit her. <em>\u201cI just saw darkness. The pain was beyond excruciating.\u201d<\/em> As Johane ran back into the gym, her husband followed and hit her again. Her cousin rushed to her side as soon as she could and helped Johane get back into the gym.<\/p>\n<p>After the attack, Johane called the police and they instructed her to go the closest precinct. Johane was having trouble dealing with the assault she had just endured. She then remembered the number she gave to clients who experienced domestic violence. <em>\u201cJune 21st HOPE kept repeating in my mind, \u201d Johane explains. \u201cI just wanted to hear a comforting voice say that it was going to be okay.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Finding Comfort, Compassion and Safety<\/h2>\n<p>Johane called the Safe Horizon Domestic Violence Hotline and was relieved to hear the kind voice of a hotline advocate. She told the advocate how hurt and humiliated she was. The hotline advocate helped Johane calm down and reassured her that she could get help. <em>\u201cI knew that I would have to go to the police, file the report, and then go to court&#8230;But I knew I wasn\u2019t alone, which is what was important to me when I made that call.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That weekend she stayed at her parent\u2019s home where her parents were watching Johane\u2019s daughter. With her family close by for support, Johane was able to take steps to address her safety concerns. She filed for, and over time obtained, an order of protection as well as custody of her daughter.<\/p>\n<h2>Finding Recovery Through Advocacy<\/h2>\n<p>Johane\u2019s experience strengthened her desire to advocate for victims of domestic violence and for Safe Horizon. She does this by sharing her story as a member of our Speakers Bureau. Johane was also one of the survivors on a panel at Safe Horizon\u2019s 2015 Domestic Violence Conference. <em>\u201cWe have to educate and let people know what Safe Horizon does and the services that are out there for everyone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;I knew that it was okay that I needed help and support. Safe Horizon launched the #PutTheNailinIt campaign to spark a conversation around domestic violence by asking supporters to take the vow to end domestic violence in three simple steps:\r\n1) <strong>Donate<\/strong> to help end domestic violence\r\n2) <strong>Paint<\/strong> your left ring fingernail purple,  the color of the anti-domestic violence movement\r\n3) <strong>Share<\/strong> a photo of your painted fingernail on social media with the hashtag #PutTheNailinIt\r\n\r\n<strong>Why is this such an important issue?<\/strong>\r\n\r\n60 percent of Americans say they know a victim of sexual assault or domestic violence and 57 percent have never actually discussed either issue with their friends (AVON,  2013). 73 percent of U.S. parents say they never had a conversation about domestic violence or sexual assault with their children (AVON,  2013).\r\n\r\nPeople from all around the world have already participated in this campaign by donating and painting their fingernail purple.\u00a0 Celebrities including Kyra Sedgwick,  Dave Navarro,  Tamron Hall and Alan Cumming have lent their voice.\u00a0 This campaign is focused on moving away from the bruised face and black
