*Christina made a difficult decision to leave her abusive husband when her son *Julian was 8-years-old. Julian told mommy he was scared – he wanted the hitting to stop.<\/p>\n

Julian was referring to the violence he saw happen earlier that night when his father assaulted his mother.<\/p>\n

When Domestic Abuse Affects Children<\/h2>\n

Christina was in the middle of cooking dinner when her husband stormed in. He started cursing violently and beat her in front of Julian.<\/p>\n

She begged him to stop the violent attack. Julian heard his mother and desperately tried to intervene. Little Julian urged his father to leave mommy alone.<\/p>\n

The physical violence stopped temporarily, but Christina made the decision to leave so Julian’s father could cause any more pain.<\/p>\n

The decision to leave was not easy. To save both herself and Julian, Christina would have to not only overcome the physical and emotional abuse, but the death threats she would receive from her own husband.<\/p>\n

Domestic Violence Hotlines: Answering the Call
\n<\/span><\/h2>\n

Christina called Safe Horizon\u2019s domestic violence hotline<\/a>. It was one of the 99,000 calls from domestic violence victims in New York we received that year.<\/p>\n

Our expert staff answered her call and were able to find placement for her and Julian in one of our eight domestic violence shelters<\/a>. It was there that both Christina and Julian found the support they needed to move forward.<\/p>\n

Christina tells us she is overwhelmed with appreciation for Safe Horizon community members who gave her and Julian the opportunity to rebuild their lives.<\/p>\n

Experiences of isolation and financial dependence leave many victims seeking to separate from an abusive partner with few of the financial and social resources required to find a new place to live. For victims lacking safe housing options, domestic violence\u00a0emergency shelters offer a safe refuge.\u00a0In\u00a0a typical day, nearly 24,000 victims and their children are receiving emergency shelter services in the United States. (National Network to End Domestic Violence (2014)\r\n\r\nEmergency domestic violence shelters are considered essential in protecting victims from abuse and linking victims facing housing instability to longer term solutions. They offer unique benefits compared with traditional shelters for homeless individuals and families, including confidential locations and increased security protocols, as well as supportive services geared toward victims, such as safety planning, support groups, and advocacy.\r\n\r\nResearch suggests that emergency domestic violence shelters are a critical resource for victims.\r\n
