\"Cathy\u2019s<\/p>\n

Home can be a place where we go to find peace and safety, but for *Cathy, it was where she feared for her life. For years, Cathy lived with her physically and emotionally abusive partner who was also her daughter\u2019s father. When he beat her in front of their daughter, Cathy decided that she could no longer take the pain.<\/p>\n

Cathy wanted to leave but she had nowhere to go. Needing help, Cathy called Safe Horizon\u2019s Domestic Violence Hotline<\/a>. The hotline advocate was able to connect Cathy to one of our eight domestic violence shelters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cathy and her Daughter Escape to Safety and Learn to Open Up<\/h2>\n

At the shelter, Cathy and her daughter now had a safe space to live. They were supplied with food, clothes, toiletries, and other day-to-day essentials. Cathy was assigned a case manager and they began meeting regularly to develop a plan of action to help Cathy\u00a0recover and rebuild her life.<\/p>\n

At first, Cathy was uneasy discussing her relationship with her former partner. She told us that learning to trust after being hurt by someone she loved was very difficult. She attended a support group, and at first, was often quiet. Little by little she began to open up. The case manager noticed that Cathy suffered trauma symptoms and told her about Safe Horizon\u2019s Counseling Center which specializes in providing trauma-focused treatment to survivors of crime and abuse of all ages, including children. Initially, Cathy was hesitant to seek Counseling services. With the support of our compassionate staff, she began to understand that counseling could be part of the healing process. Knowing that we would support whatever decision she made, Cathy chose to go with her daughter to the Counseling Center and start the healing process.<\/p>\n

Restarting her Life<\/h2>\n

Once Cathy began counseling, she told the case manager that she was ready to pursue a career that would help create a new life for her and her daughter. We helped connect her to a cosmetology school. While she pursued her education we helped arrange child care and worked with her to navigate the public assistance system.<\/p>\n

After a few months, Cathy received a voucher for the Living in Communities (LINC) Rental Assistance program. Funded by New York City, the LINC program helps families move out of shelters and into stable housing. Cathy and her case manager worked to find an apartment in a neighborhood that Cathy and her daughter felt comfortable living in. Once the apartment was identified, a LINC aftercare representative met with Cathy and her case manager to help her and her daughter transition into their new home.<\/p>\n

In the spring Cathy and her daughter moved into their own apartment. The LINC representative regularly follows up with Cathy to ensure that she is doing well in her new community. Cathy said she was thankful to Safe Horizon staff at the shelter because they were there to support her and her daughter through the most difficult time of their lives. Now Cathy and her daughter have a place to find peace and safety; a place they call home.<\/p>\n

Safe Horizon operates eight domestic violence shelters<\/a> located throughout the five boroughs of New York City. These facilities provide shelter and critical resources for victims escaping abuse. The person who manages our shelters is the Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters, Kelly Coyne.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

How Kelly Became Interested in Helping Domestic Violence Victims<\/h2>\r\nOriginally from North Carolina, Kelly discovered her passion for helping victims of domestic violence while pursuing an undergraduate degree in public health. While student teaching, one of her 9th<\/sup> grade students was absent for several days. Kelly was shocked to learn that the student was admitted to the hospital because she was physically abused by her boyfriend. This incident inspired Kelly to pursue a career in which she could help victims of violence.\r\n

How Kelly Found Safe Horizon<\/h2>\r\nKelly coordinated a violence against women program at a local university. Later, she joined a victim advocacy agency working for their domestic violence shelter. During this time Kelly frequently came across mentions of Safe Horizon\u2019s domestic violence shelters. \u201cI was intrigued by how the shelters serve all five boroughs of New York City and provide essential services to victims of domestic violence who need it the most, <\/em>\u201d Kelly explains.\r\n

Kelly\u2019s First Role<\/h2>\r\nKelly joined Safe Horizon in 2013 as the director of Prelude House, one of six emergency shelters we operate. In this role, Kelly became a steadfast advocate for our survivors and a recognized leader within the organization.\r\n

Kelly\u2019s Impact as Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters<\/h2>\r\nOne of her objectives as Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters is to focus on creating opportunities to develop, research and integrate more trauma-informed services\u00a0to compliment the services we already offer. \u201cWe want to equip both the shelter staff and shelter residents with techniques that help deal with trauma<\/em>, \u201d Kelly explains.\r\n\r\nAn example of implementing trauma-informed services is teaching shelter residents and staff a technique called Grounding. This technique can help individuals cope with the emotional pain caused by something happening in the present that reminds them of a past traumatic event. Grounding is a practice where a person dealing with the feelings of reliving past trauma is reminded that they are in a safe place and in the present moment. \u201cTeaching techniques like grounding can help minimize the trauma our shelter residents and shelter staff members can experience<\/em>, \u201d Kelly further explains.\r\n

What #PutTheNailinIt Means to Kelly<\/h2>\r\nKelly\u2019s passion for helping domestic violence victims extends beyond her work. She is an active supporter of our #PutTheNailinIt campaign to end domestic violence<\/a>.
