Team Horizon<\/a> is Safe Horizon\u2019s grassroots fundraising program, empowering ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things in their communities by supporting our services for victims of violence. Brooklynite Keith L. Forest is devoted to raising money for Safe Horizon\u2019s Jane Barker Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center<\/a> (CAC). This is one of five Safe Horizon CACs dedicated to helping children who have endured sexual or severe physical abuse. Since November 2014, Keith has donated over $2, 400 in cash and another $1, 000 in clothing to support this invaluable resource for child victims of abuse.<\/p>\n

Keith grew up instilled with a strong sense of philanthropy. \u201cMy mother inspired us to be the change we wanted to see, <\/em>\u201d Keith explains. He became interested in helping child victims of abuse after someone close confided to him about struggling with the trauma of being sexually abused as a child. While researching organizations that help child victims of abuse, Keith found Safe Horizon and learned about how our CACs help reduce the traumatic effects of being abused as a child.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to do my part to make sure at least one more child doesn\u2019t grow up feeling bad about themselves, <\/em>\u201d Keith explains.<\/p>\n

How Keith Helps<\/h2>\n

Through his media production company, Urban ID Media, Keith holds the Brooklyn\u2019s Best Honors\u00a0event that honors local community members and business owners in Brooklyn and also raises funds to benefit the Jane Barker Brooklyn CAC. The events also present opportunities to share Safe Horizon’s mission with attendees and inspire them to join Keith in working to help child victims of abuse.<\/p>\n

Recently\u00a0Keith took a group of these supporters on a tour of the Jane Barker Brooklyn CAC with the Center’s Senior Director Gena Diacomanolis. Gena shared more information about how every\u00a0one of our CACs is staffed with a team of experts who work side-by-side to provide victims of child abuse with medical, legal, mental health services, and more.<\/p>\n

This comprehensive approach enables the Jane Barker Brooklyn CAC\u00a0to help more than 2, 000 child victims each year. Keith\u2019s ongoing support and advocacy continues to inspire the growth of the CAC not only financially, but also through\u00a0community awareness. Keith along with other members of Team Horizon can help us reduce the harm of child abuse for kids in Brooklyn and throughout all of New York City.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Urania Castaneda, director of clinical and forensic services at our Bronx Child Advocacy Center (CAC) <\/em><\/p>\r\nPassionate and bursting with positive energy, Urania Castaneda is dedicated to helping child victims of abuse in as many ways as possible. As the director of clinical and forensic services at our Child Advocacy Center (CAC) in the Bronx, she empowers child victims of abuse, trains her team of clinical forensic specialists social workers to help other children do the same, and raises money to support the work of Safe Horizon.\r\n\r\nLocated throughout the five boroughs of New York City, our CACs have a multidisciplinary team of experts who work together to investigate, respond to, and prosecute cases of child sexual and severe physical abuse. This team, based at each CAC includes: child protective staff from the NYC Administration from Children\u2019s Services, detectives from the New York Police Department\u2019s Child Abuse Squad, medical professionals from premier hospitals, Assistant District Attorneys, and mental health and support staff from Safe Horizon.\r\n\r\nIn an effort to limit the number of times that a child will need to be interviewed, the CAC coordinates a single initial interview of each child called a forensic interview. This interview helps the team of experts determine how to address the immediate needs of the child and facilitate the gathering of information vital to the investigation of the case.\r\n\r\nChildren may still have difficulty opening up during this process because their trust has been violated. Often this trust has been violated by someone related or an authoritative figure who was meant to protect them. That\u2019s why it\u2019s critical to make children feel safe and lead the conversation in a nonjudgmental manner. \u201cWhen a child comes in completely distraught and nervous and gives me permission to help during the interview, I feel that I can give him or her enough support to open up and be comfortable.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n\"BXCAC-Warriors\"\r\n

Raising Team Spirit<\/h2>\r\nIn addition to directly helping child victims of abuse, Urania collaborates with her staff to raise money through Safe Horizon\u2019s grassroots fundraising group, Team Horizon. Their group, BXCAC Warriors, participate in various runs and grueling obstacle courses called Spartan Races and have raised over $1, 400 to-date.\r\n\r\nThe most recent race combined Urania\u2019s love of giving back with a lifelong dream. \u201cWhen I was younger, it was my dream to go backpacking around the world. Twenty years later I decided to make it happen by putting it on my vision board. Within the course of a month, things just webbed into place.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n\"Uranias-Signed-Safe-Horizon-Shirt\"\r\n

Urania had the people she met in Europe sign her Safe Horizon shirt<\/em><\/p>\r\nUrania and BXCAC Warriors members have even backpacked across Europe to participate in Spartan Races in France and Spain. The people she met in Europe were inspired to support her journey. \u201cIn France they let me speak on stage and everyone signed my Safe Horizon shirt, which I wore for both races. In Spain they invited me to conduct a small training at a hospital for the doctors and consultants.\u201d<\/em>\r\n

Leaps of Faith<\/h2>\r\nThese life-changing experiences taught Urania to embrace life\u2019s obstacles and strengthened her spirit to continue to help abused children. \u201cWhen you\u2019re working with child victims of abuse, you often lose yourself in the work and you see a lot of ugliness. When I came back from Europe, I fell in love with people and the world all over again.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\nThe trip also served as a somber reminder of the great need for the CAC model to be implemented on a global scale. \u201cTheir interest in the model of the CACs makes me realize that there is still work to be done at an international level.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\nUrania and BXCAC Warriors latest endeavor will be participating in the 2016 Panasonic New York City Triathlon.
