Safe Horizon operates eight domestic violence shelters<\/a> located throughout the five boroughs of New York City. These facilities provide shelter and critical resources for victims escaping abuse. The person who manages our shelters is the Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters, Kelly Coyne.<\/p>\n

How Kelly Became Interested in Helping Domestic Violence Victims<\/h2>\n

Originally from North Carolina, Kelly discovered her passion for helping victims of domestic violence while pursuing an undergraduate degree in public health. While student teaching, one of her 9th<\/sup> grade students was absent for several days. Kelly was shocked to learn that the student was admitted to the hospital because she was physically abused by her boyfriend. This incident inspired Kelly to pursue a career in which she could help victims of violence.<\/p>\n

How Kelly Found Safe Horizon<\/h2>\n

Kelly coordinated a violence against women program at a local university. Later, she joined a victim advocacy agency working for their domestic violence shelter. During this time Kelly frequently came across mentions of Safe Horizon\u2019s domestic violence shelters. \u201cI was intrigued by how the shelters serve all five boroughs of New York City and provide essential services to victims of domestic violence who need it the most, <\/em>\u201d Kelly explains.<\/p>\n

Kelly\u2019s First Role<\/h2>\n

Kelly joined Safe Horizon in 2013 as the director of Prelude House, one of six emergency shelters we operate. In this role, Kelly became a steadfast advocate for our survivors and a recognized leader within the organization.<\/p>\n

Kelly\u2019s Impact as Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters<\/h2>\n

One of her objectives as Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters is to focus on creating opportunities to develop, research and integrate more trauma-informed services\u00a0to compliment the services we already offer. \u201cWe want to equip both the shelter staff and shelter residents with techniques that help deal with trauma<\/em>, \u201d Kelly explains.<\/p>\n

An example of implementing trauma-informed services is teaching shelter residents and staff a technique called Grounding. This technique can help individuals cope with the emotional pain caused by something happening in the present that reminds them of a past traumatic event. Grounding is a practice where a person dealing with the feelings of reliving past trauma is reminded that they are in a safe place and in the present moment. \u201cTeaching techniques like grounding can help minimize the trauma our shelter residents and shelter staff members can experience<\/em>, \u201d Kelly further explains.<\/p>\n

What #PutTheNailinIt Means to Kelly<\/h2>\n

Kelly\u2019s passion for helping domestic violence victims extends beyond her work. She is an active supporter of our #PutTheNailinIt campaign to end domestic violence<\/a>. The campaign involves donating to Safe Horizon, painting your left ring fingernail purple and sharing a photo of the purple fingernail on social media using hashtag #PutTheNailinIt.<\/p>\n

Kelly has noticed the huge impact this simple act has had on her personal and professional life. \u201cWhen the domestic violence shelter residents see my purple fingernail, it reminds them that I\u2019m not only supporting them, but that I\u2019m committed to ending violence<\/em>,\u201d says Kelly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Safe shelter when survivors need it most.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our Domestic Violence Shelters provide temporary safe housing to survivors and their families in a supportive, welcoming environment. Shelters also provide resources beyond temporary housing\u2014including legal support, financial guidance, job placement, counseling, support groups, childcare, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We offer eight shelters across the five boroughs. Our shelters are in confidential locations so survivors are able to heal in privacy and safety.
