Goldman Sachs Operations Women’s Network Volunteers at Rose House Domestic Violence Shelter<\/em><\/p>\n August 11, 2015<\/em><\/p>\n Safe Horizon\u2019s domestic violence shelters<\/a> provide safe places where domestic violence victims and their families can escape abuse and obtain resources to help them start new lives. In addition to offering supportive services that help victims overcome abuse, we also strive to create fun activities to help residents relax and enjoy themselves. Recently, volunteers from Goldman Sachs\u2019 Operations Women’s Network (OWN) organized a summer barbecue for the residents at one of our domestic violence shelters called Rose House to help them celebrate the season and look forward to a positive school year ahead.<\/p>\n Rose House Domestic Violence Shelter Staff Member Barbecues for the Residents<\/em><\/p>\n Through Goldman Sachs\u2019 global volunteering initiative\u00a0Community TeamWorks, a group of eight OWN volunteers joined Director of Rose House Olga Rodriguez on a tour of the facility. The volunteers learned first-hand about the extensive resources Rose House provides for over 50 families affected by domestic violence.<\/p>\n Goldman Sachs Operations Women’s Network Volunteers Create Art for the Kids at Rose House Domestic Violence Shelter<\/em><\/p>\n After the tour the OWN volunteers set up a food station with hamburgers and hot dogs along with drinks and delicious ice cream desserts for the kids and parents to enjoy. At the end of the event, the OWN volunteers distributed colorful backpacks stuffed with school essentials to all of the children and stocked the shelter\u2019s pantry with personal care items for their parents.<\/p>\n Goldman Sachs Operations Women’s Network Volunteers Serve Food for the Kids and Parents at Rose House Domestic Violence Shelter<\/em><\/p>\n Claudia Downing, a Vice President in Operations at Goldman Sachs and one of the organizers of the event let us know what a powerful impact the event made on her and her colleagues. “Hosting the\u00a0barbecue for residents and purchasing and stuffing backpacks for their children in preparation for the upcoming school year was a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community, <\/em>” Claudia told us. “That’s what Goldman Sachs Community TeamWorks is all about.”<\/p>\n A cornerstone of Goldman Sachs\u2019 community outreach founded in 1997, Community TeamWorks\u00a0gives employees a day off from work for volunteer endeavors and partnerships with nonprofit organizations to assist those in need. <\/a>A Hotline Advocate responds to a call on our domestic violence hotline, available 24\/7.<\/em><\/p>\r\nShe wanted to find a safe place in one of our shelters. Her call was one of the 98, 104 calls answered by our Hotlines in 2016. The\u00a0Advocate was able to find an opening for her and her family to heal at Lotus House; one of our eight Domestic Violence Shelters. For Olympia, escaping to shelter was not only important to her future, but her children\u2019s.\r\nFinding Critical Relief at Lotus House<\/h1>\r\n\u201cAfter living through domestic violence, coming to shelter felt like entering open arms,<\/em>\u201d Olympia says. Olympia was assigned a case manager to support her through the healing process. She told the case manager that although she was relieved to find safety for her and her family, she had difficulty opening up about the abuse because \u201ctalking about<\/em> it didn\u2019t make the abuse go away.<\/em>\u201d\r\n

<\/a>One of the common areas at Lotus House decorated for a holiday party.<\/em><\/p>\r\nThe supportive environment at Lotus House encouraged Olympia to feel safe and eventually she was able to start talking about her situation. She felt this was an instrumental element to her healing. As she puts it, \u201cI am most appreciative of the warm, welcoming staff that has always been willing to help me and my children get back on our feet.<\/em>\u201d\r\n![\"lotus-house-domestic-violence-shelter-playroom\"](\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Lotus-House-Domestic-Violence-Shelter-Playroom-2.jpg\")
<\/a>This warm and inviting room at Lotus House is full of toys for children to play with.<\/em><\/p>\r\nOnce Olympia and her sons started to work with a therapist and began to heal emotionally, becoming financially stable was her next step on the path to move forward. Our on-site vocational specialist provided guidance for her to decide what the next steps in her career should be. She was able to find a job working with developmentally delayed persons, a new career move for her in an area that had always interested her.\r\n\r\nToday, Olympia and her children are looking forward to moving into permanent housing. She is earning an income on her own and has come a long way in a short time. \u201cThanks to Safe<\/em> Horizon<\/em>, my children and I were able to save the little bit of pride that we have left. The shelter respectfully took care of us, which helped me to take care of them.<\/em>\u201d Olympia is one of 715 clients, and her children are among the 1, 060 children, who were able to find safety at one of our eight domestic violence shelters in 2016.\r\n\r\nHelp shelter residents like Olympia move from crisis to confidence by supporting our work.
