After moving to New York City, she thought she had left domestic violence behind. But, her partner in New York City also became verbally and physically abusive. The abuse escalated when he attacked her in front of her two young children. But Mimi\u2019s daughter intervened by jumping on his back.\r\n\r\nAfter the incident Mimi decided to call the authorities and they referred her to Safe Horizon\u2019s Community Program in Brooklyn. Through her work with the Community Program, Mimi could find a way to break free from the abuse and begin to heal.\r\n<h2>How Safe Horizon Helped Mimi Overcome Verbal and Mental Abuse<\/h2>\r\nSafe Horizon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/community-programs\/\">Community Programs<\/a> serve all five boroughs of New York City. Services for victims of domestic violence and other crimes include3:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Crisis Intervention and Case Management<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Practical\/Emergency Assistance<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Information, Referrals and Advocacy<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Individual Counseling and access to Support Groups<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1695\" src=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kimmi-Herring-director-of-Safe-Horizon-Manhattan-Bronx-Community-Program.png\" alt=\"Kimmi-Herring-director-of-Safe-Horizon-Manhattan-Bronx-Community-Program\" width=\"600\" height=\"551\" \/>\r\n\r\nAt the Brooklyn Community Program Mimi met someone who would change her life forever; the Director of the Brooklyn Community Program, Kimmi Herring.\r\n\r\nKimmi helped Mimi understand that the violence and abuse she experienced in her relationships was not her fault. She provided support and counseling so Mimi could overcome the many harmful effects of abuse that lingered. \u201c<em>There was more pain from the emotional, mental abuse than the physical, <\/em>\u201d Mimi explains. \u201c<em>Bruises heal, but the verbal and mental abuse is what I needed to break free from.<\/em>\u00a0<em>Kimmi helped me with that tremendously.<\/em>\u201d\r\n\r\nKimmi introduced Mimi to other Safe Horizon resources that could help her. Because Mimi was legally married to her partner in New York City, Kimmi connected Mimi to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/our-services\/legal-and-court-help\/domestic-violence-law-project\/\">Domestic Violence Law Project<\/a> (DVLP). The legal staff at DVLP helped Mimi obtain an Order of Protection to address her safety concerns. They also helped represent Mimi throughout the divorce process in court.\r\n\r\nMimi was living in the United States on a temporary travel visa, so Kimmi connected her to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/our-services\/legal-and-court-help\/immigration-law-project\/\">Immigration Law Project<\/a> (ILP), which helps undocumented victims of crime and abuse and their families with their legal status.\u00a0ILP helped Mimi and her daughter file for and obtain their green cards.\r\n\r\nWith Safe Horizon\u2019s help, Mimi continues to work towards overcoming the abuse she suffered. Mimi\u2019s renewed confidence in herself helped motivate her to go to school to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and continue to pursue a career as a Medical Assistant. These facilities provide shelter and critical resources for victims escaping abuse. The person who manages our shelters is the Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters, Kelly Coyne.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>How Kelly Became Interested in Helping Domestic Violence Victims<\/h2>\r\nOriginally from North Carolina, Kelly discovered her passion for helping victims of domestic violence while pursuing an undergraduate degree in public health. While student teaching, one of her 9<sup>th<\/sup> grade students was absent for several days. Kelly was shocked to learn that the student was admitted to the hospital because she was physically abused by her boyfriend. This incident inspired Kelly to pursue a career in which she could help victims of violence.\r\n<h2>How Kelly Found Safe Horizon<\/h2>\r\nKelly coordinated a violence against women program at a local university. Later, she joined a victim advocacy agency working for their domestic violence shelter. During this time Kelly frequently came across mentions of Safe Horizon\u2019s domestic violence shelters. \u201c<em>I was intrigued by how the shelters serve all five boroughs of New York City and provide essential services to victims of domestic violence who need it the most, <\/em>\u201d Kelly explains.\r\n<h2>Kelly\u2019s First Role<\/h2>\r\nKelly joined Safe Horizon in 2013 as the director of Prelude House, one of six emergency shelters we operate. In this role, Kelly became a steadfast advocate for our survivors and a recognized leader within the organization.\r\n<h2>Kelly\u2019s Impact as Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters<\/h2>\r\nOne of her objectives as Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters is to focus on creating opportunities to develop, research and integrate more trauma-informed services\u00a0to compliment the services we already offer. \u201c<em>We want to equip both the shelter staff and shelter residents with techniques that help deal with trauma<\/em>, \u201d Kelly explains.\r\n\r\nAn example of implementing trauma-informed services is teaching shelter residents and staff a technique called Grounding. This technique can help individuals cope with the emotional pain caused by something happening in the present that reminds them of a past traumatic event. Grounding is a practice where a person dealing with the feelings of reliving past trauma is reminded that they are in a safe place and in the present moment. \u201c<em>Teaching techniques like grounding can help minimize the trauma our shelter residents and shelter staff members can experience<\/em>, \u201d Kelly further explains.\r\n<h2>What #PutTheNailinIt Means to Kelly<\/h2>\r\nKelly\u2019s passion for helping domestic violence victims extends beyond her work. She is an active supporter of our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.putthenailinit.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#PutTheNailinIt campaign to end domestic violence<\/a>. Her partner had a history of being verbally abusive, but Lisa had found ways to live with that reality. During the time Lisa was working towards obtaining her Doctorate in Theology, her partner\u2019s verbal abuse escalated.\r\n\r\nIn October, 2010 Lisa finished writing her doctoral dissertation. \u201c<em>I was out with a friend celebrating the completion of my dissertation, but my partner thought I was having an affair. When I came home that night, she just began to beat me in front of my children, \u201d<\/em> Lisa explained.\r\n\r\nHer oldest daughter intervened by hitting the partner with a broom and telling her to \u201c<em>stop hitting Mommy.<\/em>\u201d\r\n\r\nWhen the hitting stopped, Lisa immediately ran to her daughter to comfort her. While holding her daughter \u2013 who had witnessed the verbal abuse for years and now this beating \u2013 Lisa decided something needed to change in her life.\r\n<h2><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4117\" src=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Community-Program-Brooklyn-BCP-Mural-1024x387.jpg\" alt=\"Community Program Brooklyn BCP Mural\" width=\"1024\" height=\"387\" \/><\/h2>\r\n<h2>Finding Her Way to Safety<\/h2>\r\nLisa decided she needed to get out of the situation she was in. \u201c<em>Not knowing what to do or where to go or who to turn to I googled \u2018domestic violence\u2019 and Safe Horizon popped up<\/em>.\u201d She called our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/hotlines\/\">Domestic Violence Hotline<\/a> and was connected to our Brooklyn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/community-programs\/\">Community Program<\/a>. There, Lisa found guidance to help her find peace, healing and hope.\r\n\r\n\u201c<em>Safe Horizon gave me a safe place to go where I explored and expressed my emotions to someone that was there to help.<\/em>\u201d\r\n\r\nSafe Horizon provided supportive counseling to Lisa and her children who needed to heal from the trauma of seeing their mother abused. Safe Horizon was also able to give her children simple items to provide stability and comfort, like school supplies and holiday gifts.\r\n\r\nLisa has since found a new home for her children and now serves as a Designated Interim Minister at Ridgeview Congregational Church in White Plains, New York. She has become a Safe Horizon champion and shares her story with other victims. <em>\u201cIn a time where I was broken to pieces, I found a family in Safe Horizon, <\/em>\u201d Dr. Robinson says. \u201c<em>Whenever I have a public speaking event, I make sure to let people know that however you decide to identify, there are \u2018safe horizons\u2019 there to help you.<\/em>\u201d\r\n\r\nSafe Horizon offers help for thousands of survivors just like Lisa.
