Please join us in saluting the following individuals for truly making a difference.\r\n<h2>Stacia Buckner, Lydia Martinez Multidisciplinary Collaboration Award<\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"wp-image-1694 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Stacia-Buckner-rape-crisis-coordinator-and-social-worker-SH.png\" alt=\"Stacia-Buckner-rape-crisis-coordinator-and-social-worker-SH\" width=\"600\" height=\"441\" \/>\r\n\r\nStacia Buckner, a rape crisis coordinator and social worker at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/community-programs\/\">Safe Horizon\u2019s Staten Island Community Program<\/a>, provides direct services to clients, supervises the rape survivor advocate program, and extends prevention efforts to the greater community. She has been chosen to receive the Lydia Martinez Multidisciplinary Collaboration Award for her role as a \"Rape Crisis Professional.\" The award is given by The New York City Alliance against Sexual Assault to passionate and dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to meet the needs of sexual assault victims in New York City.\u201c<em>It is an honor that people let me into their lives at such a pure, vulnerable moment. I value my position where I\u2019m able to assist survivors of rape and sexual assault in healing after their traumatic experiences and I am grateful that Safe Horizon gives me the platform to do so.<\/em>\u201d\r\n<h2>Kimmi Herring, Frontline Hero Award<\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1695 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Kimmi-Herring-director-of-Safe-Horizon-Manhattan-Bronx-Community-Program.png\" alt=\"Kimmi-Herring-director-of-Safe-Horizon-Manhattan-Bronx-Community-Program\" width=\"600\" height=\"551\" \/>\r\n\r\nKimmi Herring, director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/community-programs\/\">Safe Horizon\u2019s Brooklyn Community Program<\/a>, advocates for survivors of all types of violence every day. She has been chosen by New York Nonprofit Media to receive the Frontline Hero Award. The award honors behind-the-scenes human services practitioners who are committed, innovative and who lead and advocate for change in New York City.\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201c<em>I think that all of us at Safe Horizon, in our own way, are Frontline Heroes. I come to work every day and feel honored to work with people who all play a part to make New Yorkers lives safer. I can\u2019t imagine myself any place else.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Foster Grandparent Volunteers, New York City Mayoral Service Recognition Awards<\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1696\" src=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Foster-Grandparents-2016.png\" alt=\"Foster-Grandparents-2016\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/our-services\/legal-and-court-help\/court-childrens-center\/\">Safe Horizon\u2019s Court Children\u2019s Centers<\/a> provide warm, nurturing and safe places for children to go while their parents or guardians attend their court dates. The Foster Grandparent Program is a volunteer program coordinated by the New York City Department of Aging where grandparents dedicate their time to mentoring at-risk children in various settings, including our Children's Centers. The following foster grandparent volunteers were honored at the 2016 New York City Mayoral Service Recognition Awards for their outstanding volunteer service.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Edith Pascal from the Brooklyn Family Court<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Ana Benitez from the Brooklyn Family Court<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Ann English from the Manhattan Family Court<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Selma Aquilar from the Brooklyn Family Court<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Mehalia Barton from the Brooklyn Family Court<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Leslie Redwood from the Manhattan Family Court<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nJesse Colchamiro, director of these Children\u2019s Centers was proud to comment on their awards.\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201c<em>Safe Horizon is thrilled that the Mayor\u2019s office honored participants in the Foster Grandparent Program who each volunteer over 1, 000 hours of their time at the Children\u2019s Centers. These facilities provide shelter and critical resources for victims escaping abuse. The person who manages our shelters is the Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters, Kelly Coyne.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>How Kelly Became Interested in Helping Domestic Violence Victims<\/h2>\r\nOriginally from North Carolina, Kelly discovered her passion for helping victims of domestic violence while pursuing an undergraduate degree in public health. While student teaching, one of her 9<sup>th<\/sup> grade students was absent for several days. Kelly was shocked to learn that the student was admitted to the hospital because she was physically abused by her boyfriend. This incident inspired Kelly to pursue a career in which she could help victims of violence.\r\n<h2>How Kelly Found Safe Horizon<\/h2>\r\nKelly coordinated a violence against women program at a local university. Later, she joined a victim advocacy agency working for their domestic violence shelter. During this time Kelly frequently came across mentions of Safe Horizon\u2019s domestic violence shelters. \u201c<em>I was intrigued by how the shelters serve all five boroughs of New York City and provide essential services to victims of domestic violence who need it the most, <\/em>\u201d Kelly explains.\r\n<h2>Kelly\u2019s First Role<\/h2>\r\nKelly joined Safe Horizon in 2013 as the director of Prelude House, one of six emergency shelters we operate. In this role, Kelly became a steadfast advocate for our survivors and a recognized leader within the organization.\r\n<h2>Kelly\u2019s Impact as Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters<\/h2>\r\nOne of her objectives as Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters is to focus on creating opportunities to develop, research and integrate more trauma-informed services\u00a0to compliment the services we already offer. \u201c<em>We want to equip both the shelter staff and shelter residents with techniques that help deal with trauma<\/em>, \u201d Kelly explains.\r\n\r\nAn example of implementing trauma-informed services is teaching shelter residents and staff a technique called Grounding. This technique can help individuals cope with the emotional pain caused by something happening in the present that reminds them of a past traumatic event. Grounding is a practice where a person dealing with the feelings of reliving past trauma is reminded that they are in a safe place and in the present moment. \u201c<em>Teaching techniques like grounding can help minimize the trauma our shelter residents and shelter staff members can experience<\/em>, \u201d Kelly further explains.\r\n<h2>What #PutTheNailinIt Means to Kelly<\/h2>\r\nKelly\u2019s passion for helping domestic violence victims extends beyond her work. She is an active supporter of our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.putthenailinit.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#PutTheNailinIt campaign to end domestic violence<\/a>. The campaign involves donating to Safe Horizon, painting your left ring fingernail purple and sharing a photo of the purple fingernail on social media using hashtag #PutTheNailinIt.\r\n\r\nKelly has noticed the huge impact this simple act has had on her personal and professional life. \u201c<em>When the domestic violence shelter residents see my purple fingernail, it reminds them that I\u2019m not only supporting them, but that I\u2019m committed to ending violence<\/em>,\u201d says Kelly.","post_title":"Be Inspired - Kelly Helps Victims Become Survivors","post_excerpt":"A shocking incident she witnessed while student teaching inspired our VP of Domestic Violence Shelters to pursue a career helping domestic violence survivors.
