Through our Streetwork Project, we provide emergency shelter and other critical services to thousands of homeless youth each year who have experienced, or are at great risk of, violence and abuse.

With just over 200 age-appropriate emergency shelter beds for upwards of 2,000 homeless youth each night in New York City, countless young people are left each night with very difficult choices – to sleep on the streets or subways, to spend one or two nights on a couch at a friend’s house, or to trade sex for shelter. For all of these young people, the fundamental grim reality is the same: they are homeless and have nowhere to turn.

The 2015 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress provided by HUD today, however, draws artificial distinctions between homeless youth who sleep in shelters or on the streets, and those who make other, often exploitative, arrangements. Homeless people are vulnerable in every place where they have to survive, whether that’s on the street or in the home of an individual who exploits a desperate teenager for sex. Ultimately, it is far more difficult to address the magnitude of our nation’s homeless crisis and therefore dedicate needed resources if some homeless youth are counted while others are not.

We urge policymakers to more accurately acknowledge the difficult choices homeless youth are often forced to make to find a place to sleep, and in doing so help ensure that adequate resources – from shelter and outreach to housing and employment – are made available in every corner of our country.

Read The New York Times article on the HUD report for more information.

Safe Horizon issued a statement in response to the 2015 Homeless Assessment Report by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

[2013
185,183,187,346
post-2904","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-statements-and-press-releases","tag-homeless-young-people","tag-homeless-youth","tag-streetwork-project","tag-youth-homelessness","issue-homeless-youth

Imagine living through violence so physically and emotionally painful that it is the reason you become homeless.

Gimella was a teenager who lived in an unstable home where her parents constantly fought and her father physically abused her. The situation got worse when Gimella’s mother moved to a different state and her brother’s girlfriend moved in. Because of the tension between Gimella and her brother’s girlfriend, the insecurity caused by her mother leaving and the ongoing abuse from her father, Gimella felt she had no choice but to leave.

With no identification, money or way to support herself, Gimella survived by staying with friends and sleeping on their couches. She had no single place to call home and was unable to finish high school.

Finding Critical Support at Streetwork Project

Gimella thought she would be homeless forever until one day a friend told her about an organization that could help. The organization referred her to Safe Horizon’s Streetwork Project where we provide homeless teens and young people with refuge, guidance and critical resources such as:

Daily necessities - meals, showers, laundry and clean clothing

Assistance with obtaining Medicaid, food stamps and SSI

Access to medical and mental health services

Assistance finding emergency housing

Gimella went to Streetwork Project’s Harlem Drop-In Center and felt instantly welcomed. She was assigned a case manager who was enthusiastic to help her.

Homeless youth like Gimella often qualify for government benefits, but accessing these services involves complex processes, requires follow-up and long waiting periods. As part of Streetwork Project’s advocacy efforts, the case manager worked with Gimella to help her navigate the system.

Gimella stayed dedicated to following through each step and was able to receive:

Identification documents

Long-term housing

Food stamps

Medicaid

Once she had a stable place to live, Gimella was able to focus on finishing high school. After achieving this goal Gimella decided that she wanted to continue her education. We connected her to a medical vocational school where she is currently studying to obtain her Patient Care Technician (PCT) certificate.

Motivated to Succeed

While she studies to earn her certificate, Gimella works as a senior-peer outreach worker for Streetwork Project’s Real Aids Prevention Program (RAPP). RAPP is an outreach program that focuses on promoting the sexual health of women. In this role she encourages young women to take control of their sexual health by giving out condoms, referring clients to testing centers and providing accurate information about sexually transmitted diseases and other health concerns. Gimella finds her work as a senior-peer outreach worker rewarding and empowering.

Achieving Her Goals

At Streetwork Project, Gimella found a safe place free of abuse where she received guidance and encouragement to grow professionally. With the confidence she gained, she plans to continue her education by going to college. Gimella may have had a rough start but she is now helping other young women stay healthy and safe and is developing communication and job skills that are shaping her future career ambitions. As she puts it in her own words, “With every bad experience I endured it made me more determined to succeed.”
Gimella Finds a New Future and Career through Streetwork
Gimella became homeless as a teenager to escape her abusive parents. According to National Coalition for the Homeless, 40% of homeless or at-risk youth identify as gay or transgender. To better serve the transgender community at Streetwork, two staff members created a support group called “What’s the T?”

Streetwork’s Manager of Mpowerment Ivan Monforte and Youth Advocate Brenda Duran named the transgender support group “What’s the T?” which is a pun of “what’s the gossip.” Established around 2007, the monthly support group meets at Streetwork’s Harlem Drop-in Center and provides a safe, judgement-free space where transgender and gender non-conforming homeless youth can feel free to be themselves.

"We let each individual define who they are, " Ivan explains. "We tell them not to let society tell them who they are regardless of presentation.”

In addition to community building and emotional support, the group assists young people with their transitions by providing items to help them present in their preferred gender, and in turn avoid harassment and discrimination. Some of the items available include: binders and packers for transgender men, and wigs and make up for transgender women, as well as clothing that matches their identity. A Streetwork Youth Advocate, Kathleen Cash, has even lent her skills as a makeup artist to help transgender women present in a way that aligns more with the way they feel inside, and help build their self-esteem and self-worth.

Streetwork support groups like “What's the T?” create an inclusive, nurturing environment for homeless teens no matter what their gender identification. We are proud to support these young people as they seek refuge from the stark realities of life on the streets.
Streetwork Transgender Support Group Asks What’s The
