At this year’s conference in Philadelphia, two members of the Research and Evaluation team at Safe Horizon participated in a panel conversation titled, “A Panel Discussion: Building Researcher-Practitioner Partnerships in the Field of Victim Services.”

The National Center for Victims of Crime Conference’s panel included:

Elizabeth Ebright, Research and Evaluation Associate at Safe Horizon, Moderator

Amanda M. Stylianou, Senior Director of Research & Program Development, Safe Horizon

Lauren B. Cattaneo, Associate Professor of Psychology at George Mason University

Fran Danis, Retired Associate Professor at the University of Texas in Arlington School of Social Work and Danis Consulting: Research and Evaluation for Gender Justice

Judy L. Postmus, Associate Professor at Rutgers University School of Social Work and Director of the Center on Violence Against Women & Children

The panel’s goals were to discuss:

How to develop successful researcher-practitioner partnerships

Ways in which researcher-practitioner partnerships can further best practices in the field

Methods to effectively translate research to practice in a victim-centered manner

One theme in the conversation was encouraging practitioners to seek out and contact researchers who are doing work on similar topics or with similar populations. The panelists advised approaching a researcher for an initial conversation to see if there is a fit between the work of the practitioner and the work of the researcher. Everyone on the panel agreed that these initial conversations can lead to partnerships down the road. The panelists also emphasized that the nature of an organization’s relationship with a researcher or research institution can take many forms. Dr. Cattaneo reflected that her best partnerships have been built upon the simple fact that she and the collaborator liked one another and recognized that they shared core values regarding how to best support survivors of crime.

Findings: Tips for developing researcher-practitioner partnerships

You can partner with academic institutions to utilize interns to support the organization’s work.

Feel free to shop around to learn about the different researchers in your area and find a researcher that is a “good fit” for your organization.

You can learn about the work of researchers by going to university websites and reading the faculty’s curriculum vitaes. If a researcher publishes on a topic that is of interest to your organization a good first step toward building a relationship is reaching out to schedule a phone call or a coffee meeting.

Many researchers in the field of victim services actively want to partner with organizations. Request a meet-and-greet opportunity for your organization and the researcher to share your work with each other.

As many funders are requiring evaluations as part of program grants, having researchers identified as strong potential partners prior to the request for proposals allows your organization to have a head start on funding opportunities.

To learn more about the work of Safe Horizon’s Research & Evaluation Department click here.

Elizabeth Ebright, research associate with Safe Horizon’s research and evaluation team, reviews the highlights from the 2016 National Center for Victims of Crime Conference.

https://www.safehorizon.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Elizabeth-Ebright-Research-Associate-Safe-Horizon-Research-and-Evaluation-Team-150x150.jpg
https://www.safehorizon.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Elizabeth-Ebright-Research-Associate-Safe-Horizon-Research-and-Evaluation-Team-300x300.jpg
https://www.safehorizon.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Elizabeth-Ebright-Research-Associate-Safe-Horizon-Research-and-Evaluation-Team.jpg
[2015
92,439,441,443
post-3169","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-safe-blog","tag-domestic-violence","tag-elizabeth-ebright","tag-national-center-for-victims-of-crime","tag-national-center-for-victims-of-crime-national-training-institute","issue-domestic-violence
By Dr. Amanda Stylianou
October 1, 2016

People often overlook the critical importance finances play in a victim’s decision to stay in an abusive relationship. Studies show that financial dependence is the primary reason that victims of domestic violence stay in abusive relationships. Research also suggests that over 90% of survivors report that their partners utilize economic abuse tactics. These tactics are often used in combination with other forms of physical and psychological abuse in order to gain and maintain power and control of the relationship.

Some common financial abuse tactics include:

Withholding money and shared financial information

Making important financial decisions without input from the victim

Refusing to pay for necessities such as food, clothing or childcare

Preventing the victim from gaining or maintaining employment

Running up phone bills, credit cards or utility bills in the victim's name

Forcing the victim to engage in sexual or other unwanted behaviors in order to access money

Since financial independence can heavily impact a survivor’s ability to find safety, it’s crucial to provide compassionate and effective economic guidance. Here are three ways Safe Horizon empowers survivors to achieve economic freedom and stability.

1. Support Survivors in Developing Financial Safety Plans

Leaving an abusive relationship may put an end to the physical abuse experienced by the survivor, but rarely does it put an end to economic abuse. The abuser can use economic abuse tactics from far away and continue to control the finances in attempt to force the victim to return to the relationship.

We help survivors develop financial safety plans tailored to each individual's experiences. These plans can include a variety of techniques and options to increase the survivor's financial safety. For example, financial safety plans may focus on opening up a safe bank account, identifying and accessing shared accounts and/or assets, checking and improving one's credit history, gaining access to financial paperwork (such as bank statements and tax returns), and utilizing legal remedies through the courts.

2. Increase Survivors’ Financial Literacy and Financial Confidence

Abusers often target victims’ confidence in their financial skills as a way to degrade them. This both shatters survivors’ confidence in managing their own finances and strengthens their financial reliance on the abuser. In addition, many survivors report wanting a better understanding of financial literacy topics such as creating a budget, developing a savings plan, establishing good credit and creating retirement plans.

We provide counseling and other mental health services to help survivors heal from the psychological effects of financial abuse. We also provide opportunities to learn financial literacy techniques, practice financial skills within a supportive environment, and rebuild financial confidence.

3. Support Survivors in Securing Income and/or other Financial Means

Ultimately, survivors will be able to achieve financial independence when they can secure their own income and/or alternative financial means. For many survivors, this means support in job readiness and job training. For others it means accessing shared savings and retirement accounts, disability income, child support, alimony or other forms of financial means. The survivors’ path to financial success can only be achieved in building long-term financial independence.

How You Can Help

Financial abuse can have devastating effects on survivors of domestic violence. Safe Horizon provides support for survivors that addresses not only the emotional effects of financial abuse, but practical resources as well.

Safe Horizon launched the #PutTheNailinIt campaign to spark a conversation around domestic violence. #PutTheNailinIt shines a light on the safety, hope and confidence that victims of domestic violence can achieve when the issue is more openly talked about in our society. The campaign encourages people all over the world to take the vow to end domestic violence by following these three simple steps:

Donate $1, $6, $16, $31 or any amount at PutTheNailinIt.org/donate

Paint your left ring fingernail purple, the color of the anti-domestic violence movement (A great way to start a conversation!)

Share a picture of your purple nail on social media, using the hashtag #PutTheNailinIt

You can make a difference today.
Three Ways Domestic Violence Victims Can Overcome Economic Dependence
How can financial independence heavily impact a domestic violence survivor’s ability to find safety? Dr. Amanda M. Stylianou explains." width="1024" height="683" />

By Dr. Amanda Stylianou
June 6, 2016

Domestic violence takes an enormous toll on victims and their families. Experiences of isolation and financial dependence leave many victims seeking to separate from an abusive partner with few of the financial and social resources required to find a new place to live. For victims lacking safe housing options, domestic violence emergency shelters offer a safe refuge. In a typical day, nearly 24,000 victims and their children are receiving emergency shelter services in the United States. (National Network to End Domestic Violence (2014)

Emergency domestic violence shelters are considered essential in protecting victims from abuse and linking victims facing housing instability to longer term solutions. They offer unique benefits compared with traditional shelters for homeless individuals and families, including confidential locations and increased security protocols, as well as supportive services geared toward victims, such as safety planning, support groups, and advocacy.

Research suggests that emergency domestic violence shelters are a critical resource for victims.

Victims report feeling safe in shelters and rate shelters as the most effective service for coping with abuse and ending the violence. (Few, 2005; Tutty et al., 1999)

Domestic violence shelter use has been found to be significantly associated with the termination of an abusive relationship. (Panchanadeswaran & McCloskey, 2007)

Length of shelter stay has been associated with reductions in depression as well as increases in hopefulness, self-esteem, and psychological independence from an abusive partner. (Lyon, et al., 2008; Orava, McLeod, & Sharpe, 1996)

Shelter services increase victims’ self-efficacy and coping skills and lead to a perceived increase in decision-making abilities. (Bennett et al., 2004)

In their study of 3, 410 victim residing in domestic violence shelters, Lyon et al., (2008) reported that 93% of residents agreed that their shelter experience had positively influenced their belief that they could achieve their goals, 92% felt more hopeful about their future, 91% knew more about their options, and 85% knew more about community resources.

At Safe Horizon we are the city’s largest provider of domestic violence emergency shelter programs. In 2015 we provided shelter services to 914 victims and their 1, 285 children throughout the city’s five boroughs. Learn more about our domestic violence shelters.
Emergency Domestic Violence Shelters Provide Safety and Security to Victims and Their Children
Dr. Amanda M.
