ATP works closely with local and state governments to lead human trafficking education and prevention efforts. In the following blog post, I am going to outline our latest anti-human trafficking efforts.<\/p>\n<h1>How Did the Labor Trafficking Pilot Program Come About?<\/h1>\n<p>Contrary to what the media often highlights, the majority of human trafficking is around labor, not sex. Identifying and prosecuting labor trafficking is overall more difficult because illegal labor has the face of something that is legitimate, such as food service, domestic work, construction or salon services. To address the gap in identification and reporting, we wanted to increase awareness and education through community outreach.<\/p>\n<h1>What is the Labor Trafficking Pilot Program?<\/h1>\n<p>A longstanding partnership with The Kings County District Attorney\u2019s office, Human Trafficking Unit (KCDAO) and the Brooklyn Human Trafficking Task Force (BKHTTF) led to the creation of a new Labor Trafficking Pilot Program aimed at raising awareness and engaging more communities located in Brooklyn in the fight against human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next two years, Safe Horizon will work alongside the BKHTTF to engage local organizations that already have strong ties to the Latinx and Asian communities in Sunset Park; a diverse area in Brooklyn, New York. An example of an organization that we have recently partnered with is Mixteca; a community organization that educates and organizes with and for the Mexican and Latin-American immigrant community in New York City. We have begun providing presentations and trainings tailored to specific audiences and organizations.<\/p>\n<h1>What Information is Covered Through These Presentations?<\/h1>\n<p>At presentations, I provide basic definitions and elements of human trafficking along with case examples highlighting available resources to survivors. I focus on informing people about how to identify trafficking, including recognizing red flags, how to interview potential victims in a survivor-centered manner and how to make appropriate referrals.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3722 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/LetsBeClear-Cropped-300x167.png\" alt=\"A slide from one of the Trafficking Pilot Program presentations.\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/safehorizon.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/LetsBeClear-Cropped-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/safehorizon.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/LetsBeClear-Cropped-768x428.png 768w, https:\/\/safehorizon.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/LetsBeClear-Cropped.png 856w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>What Are Some \u201cRed Flags\u201d or Signs of Labor and Sex Trafficking?<\/h1>\n<p>Human trafficking is all about power, control, and exploitation. Important red-flags include heavy surveillance at the work site or in public spaces (imagine a boss going with you to the doctor or emergency room); withholding of identification documents such as your ID or passport; very little freedom of movement or speech such as scripted narratives (a person may be told to say they make minimum wage but do not know what that hourly wage is). For health workers, a common red-flag is to see survivors with repeated injuries and, for sex trafficking specifically, present with repeated STIs or abortions.<\/p>\n<h1>What are Some Long-Term Goals for the Labor Trafficking Pilot Program?<\/h1>\n<p>Our aim is to integrate survivors involved with ATP\u2019s survivor-led advocacy group, Voices of Hope, in the curriculum-building and community presentations and trainings. Each case manager personally guides their client in obtaining critical resources to get back on their feet. Ileana Taylor is one of these inspirational ATP staff members and has been advocating for trafficking survivors as a case manager since 1999.\r\n<h2>Ileana\u2019s Role as a Case Manager<\/h2>\r\nAlthough a typical day for Ileana consists of a variety of tasks, she dedicates most of her time to helping trafficking survivors navigate complex systems to obtain vital resources and find hope and safety. This ranges from connecting clients to resources such as emergency housing to accompanying them to appointments at public benefit offices and federal agencies.\r\n\r\nIleana also supports her clients work through their legal issues with ATP\u2019s onsite staff attorneys and writes support letters for T-Visa applications. A T-Visa allows survivor of human trafficking to stay and work in the U.S. Without these vital documents, they could experience further violence when returning to their native home.\r\n\r\nATP case managers like Ileana manage 35-40 cases per year and play a crucial role in helping survivors of human trafficking rebuild their lives.\r\n<h2>Inspired to Help Human Trafficking Survivors<\/h2>\r\nIleana became passionate about fighting for human rights while living through a period of unrest in her native Guatemala. Inspired by people who have overcome trafficking, she decided to dedicate her career to helping more people affected by this horrendous crime.\r\n\r\nShe moved to the United States to pursue a better life. After earning her Associates in Mental Health from Warwick Community College, Ileana began working at ATP as a case manager. She later went on to receive both a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Social Work from Adelphi University in addition to a certificate from New York University in Trauma Counseling.\r\n\r\nCase managers like Ileana make an impact in the lives of their clients by linking them to resources they need including:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Legal help<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Clothing, housing, and education<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Medical and mental health services<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Anything necessary to help them achieve their goals<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<em>\u201cWhen people who have experienced human trafficking come in they feel at a loss, but by the end of the meeting, they become empowered,\u201d<\/em> Ileana explains.\r\n\r\nIleana loves giving the clients a new sense of hope while providing them with support.
