I don\u2019t keep up with the Kardashians, but it is hard to miss stories of the family when I am scrolling through my Facebook timeline or watching TV.<\/p>\n

Like many others, the news of Rob Kardashian targeting his ex Blac Chyna with lewd comments and allegations of infidelity flooded my newsfeed. I saw headlines like \u201cRob Kardashian, Blac Chyna at War Over Beating, Cheating Allegations\u201d or \u201cRob Kardashian and Blac Chyna throw down (and dirty) on social media.\u201d And then, almost immediately, Rob\u2019s Instagram account was deleted. Why? Because he posted sexually explicit images and private videos of his ex Blac Chyna without her consent.<\/p>\n

While some may consume this behavior as entertainment, and even blame Blac Chyna for Rob\u2019s actions, this behavior is abusive and it\u2019s wrong.<\/p>\n

The act of sharing sexually explicit content without consent is referred to as revenge porn. Revenge porn is not only abusive behavior, but it is illegal in many states. Below are some common questions I\u2019ve been seeing and wanted to take a moment to answer.<\/p>\n

What exactly is \u201cRevenge Porn\u201d?<\/h1>\n

Revenge porn is a tactic of power and control; the foundation of abusive behavior.\u00a0It is used to humiliate, demean, and intimidate someone.\u00a0People who post revenge porn online or sharing it privately are doing it specifically to cause the victim distress.<\/p>\n

Aren\u2019t Rob Kardashian\u2019s actions justified since Chyna allegedly cheated on him? He posted those photos and videos because was upset and hurt.<\/h1>\n

There is absolutely no justification for revenge porn<\/strong>.\u00a0It doesn’t matter how angry or upset you are at the victim; these actions are never acceptable. Our Deputy CEO and Chief Program Officer Liz Roberts often talks about how infidelity influences retaliation in relationships; \u201cwhen women call our hotline and talk about being beaten within an inch of their life, it\u2019s often as a result of infidelity [real or perceived]. This is still in our culture today.<\/em>\u201d It\u2019s not right.<\/p>\n

Didn\u2019t Blac Chyna consensually send these photos and videos to Rob? Maybe she shouldn\u2019t have sent them to him and they would never have been leaked.<\/h1>\n

What is captured in these videos or photographs are intimate moments shared between consenting adults.\u00a0What was never consented to<\/u>, however, was the release of these images to other people. This betrayal of trust and privacy can cause the victim to experience symptoms of trauma, depression, or anxiety.<\/p>\n

Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian have a child together. Can revenge porn affect children?<\/h1>\n

If children are exposed to this type of imagery it can be confusing, scary, or unsettling.\u00a0In this day and age, once something is on the internet, it is hard to completely erase the digital footprint.\u00a0As a result, there isn’t a way to guarantee that at some point in their life a child wouldn’t be able to discover these images.<\/p>\n

What can I do if I am a victim of revenge porn?<\/h1>\n

Being a victim of revenge porn can be a very stressful experience. Know that there are professional counselors that can offer you support around this experience.\u00a0It is not your fault that this happened. \u00a0Additionally, today, two-thirds of U.S. states have revenge porn laws on the books.<\/a> Some consider the crime a misdemeanor, where others, like Illinois, categorize it as a felony.<\/p>\n

Survivors may experience many kinds of abuse. While physical abuse is frequently recognized, emotional abuse is also common but often less talked about<\/strong>. Emotional abuse can be used along with other tactics to exert power and control over survivors. According to a study<\/a> from The National Domestic Violence Hotline, based on their 2020 service data, 95% of contacts stated they were experiencing emotional abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To understand emotional abuse, we must first understand the difference between emotional abuse and conflict. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emotional Abuse vs. Conflict<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To understand emotional abuse, we need to understand the difference between emotional abuse and normal conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conflict<\/strong> is a normal part of any relationship and is a healthy way for two people to express emotions, identify an issue, and have a chance to talk through whatever issue is bothering them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emotional abuse<\/strong> involves nonphysical behavior that belittles another person and can include insults, put down, verbal threats or other tactics that make the victim feel threatened, inferior, ashamed or degraded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When is Conflict Actually Not Conflict, but Something More? When is it Emotional Abuse?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever experienced the feeling of having a knot in your stomach when dealing with someone? Did something in your relationship just feel off? When someone feels scared, confused or like nothing they do will ever be right, this may be a sign of emotional abuse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Emotional Abuse?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Emotional abuse is behavior from another person that makes you consistently feel badly about yourself, like you just can\u2019t be you. Emotional abuse is not limited to romantic partner, but can be perpetrated by a family member, friend or coworker. Emotional abuse can make you feel guilty, ashamed, silenced, violated, uncomfortable or many other things. Emotional abuse can be harder to identify since no one else can necessarily \u201csee\u201d its effects like they can a bruise, cut, or a scar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abusive behavior is often motivated by a desire for power and control but the reasons why that need exists varies. Maybe the person who hurt you didn\u2019t do so on purpose; maybe they did. While it\u2019s helpful to understand the \u201cwhy\u201d, the reasons are not an excuse for harmful behavior- but they can make everything more confusing.
