Unfortunately, this means that if they are in youth shelter on their 21<sup>st<\/sup> birthday, they have to leave the day after.<\/p>\n<h2>What Happens Next?<\/h2>\n<p>Less than one percent of homeless youth leaving youth crisis shelter move into their own apartments with many returning to the street or other precarious situations.<\/p>\n<p>The time is NOW to give young people more time to become stable and access the supports they deserve. Members of the New York City Council <a href=\"http:\/\/cityandstateny.com\/articles\/opinion\/new-york-city-runaway-homeless-youth-deserve-better-services.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have introduced bills\u00a0Intro. 1699-2017 and Intro. 1706-2017 <\/a> to increase the age of eligibility for crisis shelter to 25 years old and increase the length of stay from 30 to at least 90 days. Safe Horizon urges the full City Council to vote on these important measures immediately.<\/p>\n<h2>Here is How You Can Help:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><em>In New York City?<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/districts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to see who your Council Member is and send an email<\/a>\u00a0asking him or her to support Intro. 1699-2017 and Intro. 1706-2017. Your support will help us provide critical services for homeless youth and victims of all violence and abuse including human trafficking, rape and sexual assault, child abuse and stalking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Sample Email to Support Homeless Youth<\/h1>\n<p>Copy and paste this email:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dear [Insert Council Members Name]<\/p>\n<p>My name is [Insert Name] and I am a constituent in your district. I am emailing you today to ask for your support of Intro. 1699-2017 and Intro. 1706-2017 which would increase the age of eligibility for youth crisis shelter to 25 years old and increase the length of stay from 30 to a 90 days, among other provisions.<\/p>\n<p>So many homeless youth are fleeing violence and abuse at home\u2014they need safe places to heal and become stable. Youth crisis shelters are literally lifelines for these young people. However, only giving them until their 21st birthday and 30 days is not nearly enough to address their many needs. Determined to start a new life for herself, she moved to New York City. But barriers were immediately placed in her way when her housing plans were derailed. As a result, she found herself homeless and sleeping at Penn Station at just 18-years-old.\r\n<h1>Alyssa Finds Hope at Streetwork Project<\/h1>\r\nAlyssa eventually found herself at Safe Horizon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/streetwork\/\">Streetwork Project<\/a>, our\u00a0drop-in program for homeless youth. With our support and access to critical resources (such as emergency shelter, food and clothing), Alyssa has rebuilt. She says that we have been \u201c<em>a pivotal thing in her life.<\/em>\u201d Director Francis Aponte-Veras reflects on the experience of homeless parents, saying, \u201c<em>So many people think that if you\u2019re homeless that you can\u2019t be a good parent.<\/em>\u201d But it\u2019s clear that Alyssa is a great mother.
