Anne is a filmmaker and producer who feels like the #MeToo movement is long overdue.<\/p>\n

Anne\u2019s films highlight violence against women, including one based on her sister\u2019s experience as a human trafficking survivor titled \u2018What About Her?<\/em>\u2019. Despite her films\u2019 subject matter, Anne says she has experienced sexual harassment on her very own sets.<\/p>\n

Today, she joins a slew of survivors in the entertainment industry, including Gabrielle Union, Alyssa Milano, and Terry Crews, who speak out about their experiences rape with sexual assault.<\/p>\n

Making the Choice to Heal<\/h1>\n

Anne had been raped twice before deciding to seek help. \u201cI knew that I didn\u2019t want to go through it alone, because I did that the first time and all it did was leave me confused,<\/em>\u201d Anne explains.<\/p>\n

For survivors of traumatic experiences, such as rape or sexual assault, deciding when or if to ask for help is a complex, personal choice. Safe Horizon offers non-judgmental support and services for survivors whenever they are ready.<\/p>\n

Anne found Safe Horizon\u2019s Rape and Sexual Assault Hotline (212-227-3000<\/a>) online, which is staffed by compassionate advocates who provide survivors with 24-hour support and connections to services. The advocate matched Anne with Katie, a trauma therapist at our Counseling Center.<\/p>\n

The Counseling Center<\/a> is the only New York State licensed mental health clinic that focuses solely on trauma-focused treatment for survivors of crime and abuse of all ages.<\/p>\n

Understanding and Overcoming Trauma from Rape<\/h1>\n

\u201cWhen I first spoke with Katie, I was really nervous because I didn\u2019t know what to expect,<\/em>\u201d Anne recalls. \u201cBut when I finally met her, she instantly made me feel safe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Anne and Katie met once a week over the course of several months to talk about the traumatic experiences Anne had gone through. Katie taught Anne some tools she could use to help her manage the sometimes debilitating feelings of fear and grief.<\/p>\n

Katie explained how trauma affects our brains and bodies. Traumatic experiences overwhelm a person\u2019s capacity to cope and process the situation. Triggers are experiences that remind survivors of the traumatic event in some way, and cause survivors to react as though they are facing a threat, including feeling, thinking, or reacting in ways that feel out of their control.<\/p>\n

Katie taught her about \u201cgrounding<\/em>\u201d techniques that could help her overcome these triggers. Grounding helps survivors of abuse and violence feel that they are safe and no longer threatened, even when their body\u2019s fight, flight, or freeze response is triggered. Grounding helps us connect to the physical body and stay in the present moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese grounding tools were so helpful. I was 110% committed to my therapy because I knew how important it was.<\/em>\u201d Anne says.<\/p>\n

Combining Filmmaking with Social Activism<\/h1>\n

After therapy, Anne was invited to join our survivor-lead advocacy and support group, the Speaker\u2019s Bureau. She volunteered to speak at Denim Day, an event to raise awareness of the myth that rape and sexual assault survivors made themselves targets because of the clothing they wore at the time of the assault.<\/p>\n

\"Anne<\/p>\n

\u201cSpeaking out loud at Denim Day was such a momentous moment for me because it was the first time I was going to say in front of people \u2018I was raped\u2019. But afterward, I realized that saying those words meant I was saying it for others as well.\u201d <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Although the journey to healing has been hard, Anne credits her empowering relationship with Katie as a continuing source of inspiration. \u201cKatie helped make me the outspoken person that I am now,<\/em>\u201d Anne says.<\/p>\n

Today, Anne continues to use her passion for filmmaking to bring awareness to the issues of human trafficking and sexual assault.<\/p>\n

From left to right: Recy Taylor, Terry Crews, Tarana Burke and Safe Horizon\u2019s Blake Johnson<\/em><\/p>\r\nFebruary 26, 2018<\/em>\r\n\r\n\u201cMe, too.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n\u201cI was told it wasn\u2019t that bad.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n\u201cI\u2019ve waited almost 40 years to tell my story.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n\u201cWe are everywhere.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\nAccording to the Center for Disease Control\u2019s National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, Sexual violence will affect 1 in 3 women and nearly 1 in 6 men<\/a>, in their lifetimes. Stories from survivors of sexual assault, abuse, and harassment have dominated our news feeds since Harvey Weinstein\u2019s accusers were met with unprecedented support and media coverage starting last October. The #MeToo hashtag reached millions on Facebook and Twitter in the first 48 hours. Conversations that had long been happening in private, or not at all, were now going public.\r\n\r\nLong before the events of the fall of 2017 brought more attention to sexual assault, people have bravely spoken out about their experiences and advocated for fellow survivors.\u00a0 In the context of the #MeToo movement, we want to highlight four individuals who helped pave the way for this national conversation.\r\n

Recy Taylor, Tarana Burke, Terry Crews, and Safe Horizon\u2019s Blake Johnson have changed the landscape of our understanding of sexual assault and our efficacy in addressing it, each in different ways.<\/h1>\r\nRecy Taylor <\/strong>was a 24-year-old wife and mother returning from church one September evening when she was kidnapped and raped by six white men. She didn't stay silent during a time when speaking out against a white assailant could have deadly consequences for women of color. Unfortunately, despite giving information that enabled law enforcement to identify at least one of her attackers, she was flatly denied justice and faced threats for making the report. \u201cThey seemed like they weren\u2019t concerned about what happened to me, and they didn\u2019t try and do nothing about it. I can\u2019t help but tell the truth of what they did to me.\u201d<\/em> Though she never found legal justice, her story helped propel the civil rights movement and galvanized efforts to support her and others like her. Taylor worked with the NAACP and Rosa Parks to seek justice for herself and others and became a lifelong advocate.\r\n\r\nIn 1997, Tarana Burke <\/strong>sat across from a 13-year-old girl who was disclosing her experience of sexual abuse. Overwhelmed by the feeling, (Burke herself first experienced sexual abuse at age 6 according to reports) she resolved to become a source of support for fellow survivors. In 2006, Tarana Burke founded the #MeToo movement to help survivors of sexual violence, particularly young women of color from low-income communities, find pathways to healing. #MeToo went viral last October when celebrities (notably Alyssa Milano) began using the hashtag, but Burke has been doing this work for years.\r\n\r\n\u201cIt wasn\u2019t built to be a viral campaign or a hashtag that is here today and forgotten tomorrow. It was a catchphrase to be used from survivor to survivor to survivor, to let folks know that they were not alone and that a movement for radical healing was happening.\u201d <\/em>She reminds us that while holding abusers accountable is crucial, the driving force is solidarity. \u201cThis iteration in social media has placed a larger focus on perpetrators being called out and held accountable for their actions. But the actual Me Too movement is about supporting sexual assault survivors.\u201d <\/em>\r\n\r\nTerry Crews <\/strong>is an actor and former NFL player who publicly accused a Hollywood executive of sexually assaulting him at a party. Since calling out his alleged abuser and taking to Twitter to support others, Crews has spoken frequently about the experience of male survivors, especially black men, and the additional barriers to justice and empathy that they face. \u201cI did nothing wrong. You almost have to repeat it. [\u2026] Because if no one gets a pass [\u2026] the whole system will be disciplined into knowing how to behave because this is all about not accepting this foul behavior[\u2026] If I would have just retaliated, in defense, I would be in jail right now. Being a large black man in America, I would have immediately been seen as a thug, but I am not a thug.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\nCrews also urges men to hold each other responsible for treating others with respect. \u201cYou need to be held accountable for the things you say, the things you do.<\/em>\u201d <\/em>Tarana Burke applauded his courage, \"It\u2019s really difficult I think as a black man to come forward and be honest about the way in which they are looked at and dealt with as survivors of it, not perpetrators.\"<\/em>\r\n\r\nBlake Johnson<\/strong> is a Supervising Social Worker at Safe Horizon, supporting survivors of sexual violence as they work to recover from their trauma. The #MeToo movement has brought sexual assault into a national conversation, and it\u2019s about so much more than just reporting criminal behavior. \u00a0\u201cI wish people understood how amazingly pervasive sexual assault is in society. Many behaviors are not quite sexual assault but are also not great. They\u2019re non-consensual,\u201d<\/em> he says. \"What\u2019s missed is that this is actually pervasive rape culture. I really want to work on what\u2019s so wrong with our culture that this is happening so often, despite a lot of intervention from organizations like Safe Horizon. The fight against sexual violence has been a very long one. How are we still here?\u201d <\/em>\r\n\r\nA critical part of the work, he says, is helping survivors reject the fear that they are responsible, and the societal pressure to be silent. \u201cYou see people understand what\u2019s happened without having to constantly feel like they were somehow at fault,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s great to see when people have that peace of mind. They go from, \u2018If I had done x, this wouldn\u2019t have happened,\u2019 to \u2018This person is a predator who chose to victimize me. I could have done things differently, sure, but this person is at fault.\u2019\u201d<\/em>\r\n
