The Hotlines are staffed with advocates who offer personalized, non-judgmental support, to survivors of crime and abuse. Of the 6,000 – 9,000 calls all three hotlines receive in a month, about 85-90% are from domestic violence survivors. Kia Myrie-Edwards, Director of the Hotlines, explains how the Domestic Violence Hotline helps survivors move from crisis to confidence.

What is Your Role as Hotlines Director?

As Hotlines Director I work to improve our response to survivors. This involves working closely with advocates and team leaders to provide live coaching and skill development. We want to make sure both survivors and Hotline Advocates feel supported.

How Many Advocates are at the Hotline Per Shift?

We typically staff around 22 advocates during the day and around four people overnight, where call volume is lower.

Can you Describe Training or Onboarding Process for Hotline Advocates?

Advocates go through extensive training and it typically takes around six months to adapt to the role. They are trained to offer non-judgmental, compassionate support for survivors and spend a significant amount of time learning about all the services we offer. During the first month of training, we conduct mock phone calls to offer an example of the types of calls they will take. When an advocate starts taking live calls, a supervisor will shadow them and provide live assistance via instant messenger. Supervisors also debrief with advocates after every call, offering support as these calls can bring up a lot of emotion.

What Services do Domestic Violence Survivors Usually Look for?

Domestic Violence Hotline callers are looking for a variety of different resources. Some want to talk about their situation or receive some form of phone counseling. Other survivors are looking to move to a domestic violence shelter. We try to connect these callers to domestic violence shelters in New York City, including Safe Horizon’s eight domestic violence shelters. We also get calls from survivors who have questions about legal issues such as court processes, restraining orders, and even child custody situations. Whatever the call is about, we can refer them to an internal Safe Horizon resource, or one of our partners.

What Times During the Day or Year do Domestic Violence Hotline Calls Increase?

Survivors call when they feel safe, so we make sure to provide around-the-clock services. We noticed that survivors call more during the daytime because the abusers might have gone to work or allowed them to leave home to run errands. Survivors who call us at night want to talk about their situation, learn about their options, and possibly create a safety plan.

We also noticed an increase in calls toward the end of June and July possibly because that’s when school ends. Many survivors with children may see this as a time when they can figure out a way to leave without interrupting their child’s school schedule. Calls also spike right around New Year’s because survivors may be making New Year’s Resolutions to leave.

What is One Thing Survivors Should Know about Hotline?

You should know that you are not alone, our advocates are there 24 hours a day 7 days a week. We will support you with whatever decision you want to make. We are knowledgeable about a wide variety of services and are always there to listen. You can remember the Hotline phone number 800-621–HOPE (4673) by thinking of June 21st HOPE.

Help Support our Hotlines

In 2017 our Hotlines answered 97,228 calls from survivors in crisis. Now you can support our lifesaving services by answering the call for hope. Your support will help victims of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, human trafficking and all forms of violence to move from crisis to confidence.

Please Donate Today

Kia Myrie-Edwards, Director of the Hotlines, explains how the Domestic Violence Hotline helps survivors move from crisis to confidence.

https://www.safehorizon.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Kia-Myrie-Edwards-Hotlines-Director_Edit-150x150.jpg
https://www.safehorizon.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Kia-Myrie-Edwards-Hotlines-Director_Edit-300x289.jpg
[2015
469,849,949,513,951
post-5984","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-safe-blog","tag-crime-victims-hotline","tag-domestic-violence-hotline","tag-hotline","tag-hotlines","tag-rape-and-sexual-assault-hotline","issue-domestic-violence","issue-rape-and-sexual-assault","issue-victims-of-other-abuse

June 6, 2018
By Riley Huston

Johane could feel her face swelling up in the darkness outside her gym where she was just attacked. Her adrenaline rushing, she racked her brain for what to do next. As a social worker, Johane referred many clients to resources like Safe Horizon’s domestic violence hotline. But in this moment she wasn’t a social worker, she was a victim in need of help herself. “As I was trying to remember the number, I kept saying to myself, ‘June 21st HOPE. June 21st HOPE. June is for the number six…” Johane then made the connection. “The number I need to call is 1-800-621-HOPE!” She made the call and a compassionate advocate was there to listen and lend support when she needed it. Her simple trick to remember the hotline phone number inspired a campaign to help countless survivors of domestic violence.

“I Referred Many of my Clients to Safe Horizon, and Then I Became a Victim myself”

Before Johane came to Safe Horizon, she was working as a social worker at ACS (Administration for Child Services) in New York City. One aspect of her job involved helping domestic violence survivors seeking help get the resources they need to create a safety plan and leave their abusive relationship if they wanted that. Johane often referred her clients to Safe Horizon’s 24/7 Domestic Violence Hotline. When asked why she chose Safe Horizon over the various resources in New York she said, “I knew they would get the services they needed. I’d seen them help so many people; I just knew they’d be able to give these survivors a next step toward safety.”

It wasn’t long before these referrals would take on a new significance for Johane, however. In 2002 she met her ex, and they were married five years later. Not long after that, they welcomed a child into their family – a daughter. By 2012, Johane and her ex decided to separate after issues of infidelity arose in their marriage.

Then in August of 2013…

On the morning of her assault, Johane says that she had a disagreement with her ex. They were separated at the time, and he asked to discuss some purchases he wanted to make for their daughter. Johane had a full day and wasn’t able to have that conversation at the time. Later that evening, Johane, was confronted by her husband outside her gym after a long workout. Exhausted, she refused to talk about the issue and told him to leave her alone. When he persisted, she called the police, her ex responded with rage. He grabbed the phone and used it to strike her face.

With adrenaline pumping - she ran around to a side door of the gym in an attempt to get away, but the door was locked. He punched her once more in the face. Johane was scared and not sure what would happen next. The police were taking too long to arrive and she needed support now.

“That Night I was a Victim, But After That Call, I Became a Survivor”

That’s when she remembered Safe Horizon, and all the clients she’d connected to services for this same kind of who were facing similar experiences. In spite of being shaken up, Johane was able to remember the hotline number. “As I was trying to remember the number, I kept saying to myself, ‘June 21st HOPE. June 21st HOPE.’ The hotline number is 1-800-621-HOPE!” Johane was able to make the call and develop a safety plan for herself.

Johane’s story inspired us at Safe Horizon to start the #621Hope campaign. We aim to help anyone who needs our services to remember the number for our domestic violence hotline. We also aim to raise funds that enable the hotline to continue this lifesaving work. Will you help us raise funds during the first 21 days of June?

“If My Story Helps One Person, I’m Happy”

Nearly five years after her assault, Johane is one of our most outspoken supporters and continues to be an ally to fellow survivors. She now works with the Department of Labor in the social work field. She also volunteers her time as a member of our Speakers Bureau, a program for former or current clients who share their story to create change and provide hope for others who are impacted by violence or abuse.

But her work helping others does not stop there. She co-founded a grassroots organization called Herising Grace—named after her Grandmother— that provides volunteer services, such as providing meals to people who are homeless, visiting children in hospitals and so much more. As an outspoken advocate, she has marched against gun violence, been featured in Safe Horizon videos, and has spoken about her experience with domestic violence on multiple media news outlets.

Two amazing women. Safe Horizon operates three confidential 24-hour hotlines that are open seven days a week, 365 days a year. Heidy is one of the Client Advocate Specialists at our Crime Victims Hotline, 866-689-HELP (4357), where she guides victims of any form of abuse or crime in obtaining help and services.

Heidy's warm personality radiates through the calm and friendly tone of her voice. This invaluable quality is especially important since hers may be the first voice a victim of abuse hears when they call our Crime Victims Hotline.

Often, a survivor's journey to safety and healing begins with a phone call. Heidy is knowledgeable about emergency and long-term resources available from Safe Horizon and other agencies. "Although many callers have experienced domestic violence, we get calls from people of all genders and ages who need help with many different types of crime." She explains. "For example, they have experienced a hate crime or had their property stolen."

How Do Our Hotline Specialists Help?

Since every Hotline call is different, Heidy cites mindfulness as a crucial way to improve her response to the variety of concerns crime victims may have. Crime victims often experience trauma, which can elicit different physical and emotional reactions. These reactions can include body aches and pains, heart palpitations, fear, anxiety and hypervigilance. "Based on what clients present, I analyze the risk and help them prioritize what is most important at that second." She says. "I then offer them information and available resources based on their concerns."

Heidy stresses that meeting a client where they are is fundamental to helping victims of abuse. That means being non-judgmental and pursuing remedies that suit a crime victims’ circumstances. "Especially when someone is in crisis, it can be hard to figure out where to go or what to do. It's my job to know about all of the services Safe Horizon offers and help the client choose what is right for them. That can be the beginning of the road to healing."

How Heidy Became an Advocate

Heidy found her calling as a high-school student when she was personally affected by domestic violence in her community. "Domestic violence was something that I saw around me.” She explains. “I knew then that I wanted to pursue a career where I could make a difference by helping survivors of crime and abuse.”

While pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice at Morrisville State College, Heidy volunteered at a domestic violence hotline. That's where she heard about Safe Horizon. This experience helped Heidy become attuned to victims' needs without ever meeting them. "If I put myself in a survivor’s shoes, I often realize that this person is telling a complete stranger their whole life's story." She says. "That instantly forms a kind of trusting bond. It's amazing because abusers often break trust, so it goes to show you how resilient someone has to be to call our Hotline and ask for help."

The Crime Victims Hotline’s Impact

In 2016, our Crime Victims Hotline answered 9,354 calls from people in crisis.
