I’m always an advocate for victims,” Carrie says with pride and conviction. For over a decade, Carrie has been part of a unique rape survivor advocate volunteer program at our Community Program in Staten Island. As a volunteer, she offers support, comfort, and advocacy to survivors of sexual assault.

About Safe Horizon’s Rape Crisis Advocate Volunteers

Our rape survivor advocate volunteers meet survivors when they arrive at the emergency department at Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital. Volunteers complete a comprehensive and rigorous training program that covers rape and sexual assault laws and survivor’s rights, medical treatment information and protocols as well as the roles of hospital staff and law enforcement officials. They use this knowledge to advocate on the survivor’s behalf.

Working with Survivors of Rape and Sexual Assault

The emergency room can be a hectic place for survivors of rape and sexual assault. That’s why Carrie takes a gentle and neutral approach. “When I meet a rape survivor, I let them know immediately that I have no agenda except to be there for them,” she explains. “My sole purpose is to be there to answer their questions and to make sure the survivor can leave the hospital with peace of mind.” This includes making the survivor as comfortable as possible whether it’s getting them food and water or providing a listening ear or shoulder to lean on. “As an advocate, you’re meeting a survivor not long after the assault happened, so they may feel confused or scared. Everyone’s response to trauma is always different, so it’s important to listen.”

Carrie further remarked that “the most important thing is to remind survivors that what happened to them could not possibly be their fault – this is not something they caused or deserve. As an advocate, you may be the first person to say this to them and you just can’t say it enough.”

How Carrie Became an Advocate for Survivors of Rape and Sexual Assault

Before becoming an advocate, Carrie worked in the financial district and was touched by the September 11th tragedy. “I lost a lot of people I knew personally – neighbors, coworkers, and friends. After the attacks, I wanted to do something to give back…to help people in some way. I just didn’t know which way yet.” When she heard the horrors of the Nixzmary Brown case, “it marked a turning point for me – a light bulb went off. I had been trying to figure out what to do next and it became very clear to me.” Carrie found the opportunity to become a volunteer rape survivor advocate. It was a unique opportunity to make an impact on someone’s life by being there during their darkest hours and try to make their situation a little better. This work has been a passion of hers ever since.

Carrie feels this work is more necessary than ever. Sexual assault has been the most under-reported crime for many reasons, but that is beginning to shift. “Thanks to the #MeToo movement and generally raising awareness about sexual assault, reporting is up and more survivors are seeking medical attention after an assault.”

Carrie knows what it means to the survivors when they have someone personally advocating for their rights. “It’s a privilege to work with people who may be at one of the lowest points in their lives. You’re in a crucial role to help them begin the journey to healing and overcoming the traumatic event.”

The program has helped over 1,000 survivors of rape and sexual assault, but it isn’t our only resource for rape and sexual assault survivors. Our 24-hour rape and sexual assault hotline is staffed by compassionate and caring advocates who can provide connections to resources or just a listening ear. Despite her films’ subject matter, Anne says she has experienced sexual harassment on her very own sets.

Today, she joins a slew of survivors in the entertainment industry, including Gabrielle Union, Alyssa Milano, and Terry Crews, who speak out about their experiences rape with sexual assault.

Making the Choice to Heal

Anne had been raped twice before deciding to seek help. “I knew that I didn’t want to go through it alone, because I did that the first time and all it did was leave me confused,” Anne explains.

For survivors of traumatic experiences, such as rape or sexual assault, deciding when or if to ask for help is a complex, personal choice. Safe Horizon offers non-judgmental support and services for survivors whenever they are ready.

Anne found Safe Horizon’s Rape and Sexual Assault Hotline (212-227-3000) online, which is staffed by compassionate advocates who provide survivors with 24-hour support and connections to services. The advocate matched Anne with Katie, a trauma therapist at our Counseling Center.

The Counseling Center is the only New York State licensed mental health clinic that focuses solely on trauma-focused treatment for survivors of crime and abuse of all ages.

Understanding and Overcoming Trauma from Rape

“When I first spoke with Katie, I was really nervous because I didn’t know what to expect,” Anne recalls. “But when I finally met her, she instantly made me feel safe.”

Anne and Katie met once a week over the course of several months to talk about the traumatic experiences Anne had gone through. Katie taught Anne some tools she could use to help her manage the sometimes debilitating feelings of fear and grief.

Katie explained how trauma affects our brains and bodies. Traumatic experiences overwhelm a person’s capacity to cope and process the situation. Triggers are experiences that remind survivors of the traumatic event in some way, and cause survivors to react as though they are facing a threat, including feeling, thinking, or reacting in ways that feel out of their control.

Katie taught her about “grounding” techniques that could help her overcome these triggers. Grounding helps survivors of abuse and violence feel that they are safe and no longer threatened, even when their body’s fight, flight, or freeze response is triggered. Grounding helps us connect to the physical body and stay in the present moment.

“These grounding tools were so helpful. I was 110% committed to my therapy because I knew how important it was.” Anne says.

Combining Filmmaking with Social Activism

After therapy, Anne was invited to join our survivor-lead advocacy and support group, the Speaker’s Bureau. She volunteered to speak at Denim Day, an event to raise awareness of the myth that rape and sexual assault survivors made themselves targets because of the clothing they wore at the time of the assault.

“Speaking out loud at Denim Day was such a momentous moment for me because it was the first time I was going to say in front of people ‘I was raped’. But afterward, I realized that saying those words meant I was saying it for others as well.”

Although the journey to healing has been hard, Anne credits her empowering relationship with Katie as a continuing source of inspiration. “Katie helped make me the outspoken person that I am now,” Anne says.

Today, Anne continues to use her passion for filmmaking to bring awareness to the issues of human trafficking and sexual assault.

Safe Horizon offers trauma-informed support and other services for survivors of rape and sexual assault. If someone close to you shares with you that they have had an experience of abuse or violence, it can be shocking, and often it’s difficult to know what to say. If it happens, here are some ways you can help:

1. Listen Compassionately and Without Judgment

Even when you disagree or don't understand.

Know that trauma— both the experience itself and how its impact stays with us— can be challenging to communicate clearly to others.  Be patient.

2. Let Them Guide the Conversation

Try not to interrupt, even though you may be feeling anxious to take action. Asking yes or no questions might force them into an area they don’t want to discuss. Instead, ask open-ended questions and let them decide how they want to answer.

3. Don't Make Assumptions

About how they feel or what their needs are.

You can offer options, but avoid telling them what they "should” do, even with good intentions. Instead, ask how you can be helpful.

4. Remember that Healing is a Complex Process

Their experience may be affecting them in ways that might not make sense to you, but are very clear to them. The effects of trauma are both mental and physical, and they are far more complex to overcome than, “Try not to think about it,” or “Just let it go,” even if it occurred a long time ago.

5. Check in With Them Later

And keep in mind that they may not feel like talking at the time.

It’s important to let them know that you care, but not to go so far as to make them feel fussed over, or like they are a problem that needs to be managed.

Share these tips by clicking the graphic below:

Please know that you and your loved one are not alone.
