For parents of babies, toddlers, and very young children, there are many concerns and needs to be met for their little ones. Many families with limited resources often have to choose between necessities such as diapers, food, transportation costs, medications, or other needs. We believe they shouldn\u2019t have to. Diapers are a significant expense and according to National Diaper Bank Network, babies use between 6 and 10 diapers per day!<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why our Vice President of Government Affairs Michael Polenberg worked with Brooklyn City Council Member Mark Treyger on legislation to provide free diapers to families in domestic violence shelters and other programs.<\/p>\n

Kelly Coyne, VP of Domestic Violence Shelters,<\/a> who oversees our eight domestic violence shelters, applauded the bill\u2019s passage: \u201cUnmet diapering needs may mean families have to reuse diapers or leave their child in a diaper for longer than recommended. Lack of access to diapers can also impact a child\u2019s ability to attend daycare which in turn can impact the caregiver\u2019s ability to work. This bill will have a tremendous impact on our families\u2019 ability to work, pursue an education and help ensure the health of the children. Families should not have to choose between diapers and other essential needs.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

At our shelters, we provide a safe space to heal and temporary place to live for many survivors with babies, toddlers, and young children. In fact, we had 503 children under the age of five stay with us for a period of time in 2017. During this time, we distributed approximately 2,000 diapers. With no dedicated funding stream to fill this need, resources were diverted from other important programming.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why we are deeply grateful to Council Member Treyger, Council Speaker Corey Johnson and the entire New York City Council for passing this bill that will provide diapers and baby wipes to families in need at Family Justice Centers, Department of Education LYFE programs, domestic violence shelters, and shelters operated by the Department of Homeless Services and the Department of Youth and Community Development.<\/p>\n

This new law will help families and shelters spread their money further to help meet each family\u2019s basic needs. Our CEO Ariel Zwang stated \u201cSafe Horizon is grateful to Council Member Mark Treyger, Speaker Corey Johnson and the entire City Council for ensuring that diapers will be readily available to families in domestic violence shelters throughout New York City. The availability of diapers means families won\u2019t have to choose between keeping their little ones clean and <\/em>dry, and meeting other basic needs. We applaud the City Council for passing common-sense legislation and for helping to ensure that domestic violence shelters can better meet the needs of their residents.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

No parent should have to sacrifice diapers for their young one. Fortunately, parents in our domestic violence shelters will not have to.<\/p>\n

Safe Horizon operates eight domestic violence shelters<\/a> located throughout the five boroughs of New York City. These facilities provide shelter and critical resources for victims escaping abuse. The person who manages our shelters is the Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters, Kelly Coyne.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

How Kelly Became Interested in Helping Domestic Violence Victims<\/h2>\r\nOriginally from North Carolina, Kelly discovered her passion for helping victims of domestic violence while pursuing an undergraduate degree in public health. While student teaching, one of her 9th<\/sup> grade students was absent for several days. Kelly was shocked to learn that the student was admitted to the hospital because she was physically abused by her boyfriend. This incident inspired Kelly to pursue a career in which she could help victims of violence.\r\n

How Kelly Found Safe Horizon<\/h2>\r\nKelly coordinated a violence against women program at a local university. Later, she joined a victim advocacy agency working for their domestic violence shelter. During this time Kelly frequently came across mentions of Safe Horizon\u2019s domestic violence shelters. \u201cI was intrigued by how the shelters serve all five boroughs of New York City and provide essential services to victims of domestic violence who need it the most, <\/em>\u201d Kelly explains.\r\n

Kelly\u2019s First Role<\/h2>\r\nKelly joined Safe Horizon in 2013 as the director of Prelude House, one of six emergency shelters we operate. In this role, Kelly became a steadfast advocate for our survivors and a recognized leader within the organization.\r\n

Kelly\u2019s Impact as Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters<\/h2>\r\nOne of her objectives as Vice President of Domestic Violence Shelters is to focus on creating opportunities to develop, research and integrate more trauma-informed services\u00a0to compliment the services we already offer. \u201cWe want to equip both the shelter staff and shelter residents with techniques that help deal with trauma<\/em>, \u201d Kelly explains.\r\n\r\nAn example of implementing trauma-informed services is teaching shelter residents and staff a technique called Grounding. This technique can help individuals cope with the emotional pain caused by something happening in the present that reminds them of a past traumatic event. Grounding is a practice where a person dealing with the feelings of reliving past trauma is reminded that they are in a safe place and in the present moment. \u201cTeaching techniques like grounding can help minimize the trauma our shelter residents and shelter staff members can experience<\/em>, \u201d Kelly further explains.\r\n

What #PutTheNailinIt Means to Kelly<\/h2>\r\nKelly\u2019s passion for helping domestic violence victims extends beyond her work. She is an active supporter of our #PutTheNailinIt campaign to end domestic violence<\/a>. They provide temporary housing to over 850 women and 1,100 children after they\u2019ve escaped an abusive situation each year. Here I am touring the shelter.
