The young people experiencing homelessness who come to Safe Horizon\u2019s Streework Project<\/a> overwhelmingly identify as LGBTQ+. From June 1, 2020, to May 31, 2021, youth who identify as transgender and gender non-conforming increased from about 10% to 16%.<\/p>\n

LGBTQ+ youth often become homeless because they have been forced out of homes where they experienced violence and neglect from family members. When seeking respite, LGBTQ+ homeless youth face the most challenges to obtaining a chance for permanent housing \u2013 for many reasons.<\/p>\n

Scarcity of Shelters Dedicated to the LGBTQ+ Community<\/h2>\n

For many LGBTQ+ homeless youth, shelter options remain few and far between. The majority of homeless young people are given adult shelters as their only option for a safe place to stay. While entering a shelter for adults can be intimidating for any young person, LGBTQ+ youth face additional dangers such as fear of being outed. Once that happens, it puts young people at an even greater risk for violence from other residents. Access to stable housing is even more critical for trans youth. Homeless trans youth are often being forced into a shelter that does not match their gender identity, which poses an even greater risk of them being targeted and sexually harmed or exploited. This is especially true for youth who identify as trans women and are going through a process that requires medical care like hormone treatment or gender affirmation surgery. Access to safe medical care and housing are important in this process. With limited options and real worries about safety, young people can be forced into the streets where they often opt to take unsafe street hormones, which poses an even greater risk to their health and safety.<\/p>\n

Lack of Shelters with Sufficient Mental Health Services<\/h2>\n

Because many LGBTQ+ youth have been forced out of their homes and abandoned by family, they experience a higher degree of behavioral health challenges. Many suffer from mental health issues as a result of the trauma they experience around their sexual orientation and gender identity. Adult shelters are often not equipped to support their care or address their mental health needs. That\u2019s why it’s important that staff in housing programs serving LGBTQ+ homeless youth are specifically trained in addressing the developmental stages of teens and young adults.<\/p>\n

Limited Access to Housing Vouchers<\/h2>\n

As I explained in my op-ed in the Gotham Gazette<\/a>, LGBTQ+ homeless youth face a tremendous amount of red tape to obtaining housing vouchers. These vouchers are important public benefits that allow people to find their own independent housing at an affordable price. New York City\u2019s Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) shelters and drop-in centers are specifically designated for youth and young adults ages 16-24. Yet, youth within that DYCD system aged 18-24 are not eligible to receive housing vouchers unless they move into a Department of Homeless Services (DHS) adult shelter \u2013 which would mean displacement, isolation, and often fear. These critical housing vouchers were being withheld from young people in DYCD programs rather than providing a viable solution for permanent affordable housing to these individuals.<\/p>\n

LGBTQ+ Homeless Youth Deserve Shelter and Safe Housing<\/h2>\n

Housing is a form of safety and it’s important that we provide LGBTQ+ homeless youth easy access to it. I can’t stress how difficult it is to remember that many young homeless LGBTQ+ people have to cope with systems which are often not sensitive to or know how to respond to their unique needs. With our collective and continued advocacy, we can help NYC ensure safe housing for homeless young people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Young people deserve to feel safe, wherever they are.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our Streetwork Project provides youth experiencing homelessness with short-term shelter and supportive resources with no judgement. We have two Drop-In Centers where youth can find necessities including hot meals, showers, and clothing, as well as medical care, sexual health services, and needle exchange. Our Overnight Shelter also offers temporary shelter for youth in need of a safe place to sleep. Two Outreach Teams visit different areas across the city where young people gather to provide food and resources, meeting youth where they are.

For many of these survivors, the partners who hurt them used their sexual orientation and\/or gender identity to further isolate or control them. Some survivors feared being outed, some feared being arrested by the police, some feared deportation, some worried that they would no longer be able to access the spaces where they felt most at home, and some hid who they were when they went into shelter out of fear of being assaulted by other residents. LGBTQ+ survivors, especially queer and trans people of color, face stigma and multiple barriers to safety.\r\n\r\nWe are living in a country where at least 12 transgender people have been murdered since the beginning of 2018. Often we only hear about trans people, specifically trans women of color, as victims of murder and abuse. The murder of trans and queer people, frequently at the hands of an intimate partner, is a crisis and a national stain. We must work together to prevent these senseless and despicable murders. Helping survivors is about healing. But it must also be about ensuring that queer and trans people, especially people of color, can thrive, achieve success, and live up to their full value and potential. It requires dismantling the racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, and classist systems and structures that value certain lives over others.\r\n\r\nIt is still a radical act to live openly LGBTQ+ and proud in America and in this world. It is still a radical act for queer folks to join together, to dance, to live, and to love in public. And it is somehow still radical for queer and trans people to just try to survive. Roxana Hernandez, a transgender woman who fled Honduras to escape the violence and hate she suffered as a trans person, died in the custody of ICE last month when she was only trying to find a better and safer life here.\r\n\r\nSafe Horizon tries to create a safer space for LGBTQ+ survivors of crime and abuse by training and supporting staff on cultural competency, the necessity of using inclusive language, and the unique and diverse needs and obstacles facing LGBTQ+ communities. Safety planning and counseling for LGBTQ+ clients is not one-size-fits-all; we take the lead from each and every client when safety planning and providing support. When meeting with a survivor, we also remain mindful of the language we use and refrain from making assumptions about their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. The quickest way a counselor can make a survivor feel unsafe and unheard is to misgender them or their partner.\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s been two years since the mass shooting at Pulse. The impacts of that traumatic event, an attack on LGBTQ+ people of color, are as present as ever. Violence surrounds us and fills the news from around the world each day. Intimate partner violence, sexual violence, hate violence, gender-based violence, gun violence. They never end. People continue to hurt one another. What can we do?\r\n\r\nWe must work together, all of us, to make our homes, our streets, and our communities safe for everybody, not just some. We must stand behind and alongside survivors of intimate partner violence and all other forms of abuse. We must stand behind and alongside our lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender non-conforming, queer, and questioning siblings.
