An autopsy determined she’d been strangled.

Meanwhile, authorities launched a search for Laundrie at Florida’s Carlton Reserve, where his remains were found October 20, 2021. He died after a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, leaving behind a notebook in which he claimed responsibility for Petito’s death, the FBI said.

Petito’s parents said they never suspected that Laundrie posed any danger to their daughter. “We just didn’t see any red flags,” Nicole Schmidt said in a November 2021 TV interview.

Friends told People magazine the couple was on and off, alternating between toxic and healthy. “They always had some drama,” one friend said. “They had very high highs and very low lows. But they seemed to really love each other,” another friend said.

Intimate Partner Violence Among Young Adults

Women between the ages of 18 and 24 are most commonly abused by an intimate partner, according to data by the National Coalition Against Domestic violence. Altogether, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. This includes a range of behaviors (e.g. slapping, shoving, pushing) and in some cases might not be considered “domestic violence.”

People are always surprised to hear how prevalent intimate partner violence is among young people, Maureen Curtis, vice president of criminal programs for victims’ service agency Safe Horizon, tells A&E True Crime. Based in New York City, Safe Horizon is the largest such agency in the United States.

Young people, possibly out of insecurity and newness to relationships, generally have a tendency to view extreme jealousy as a sign of love, rather than the dangerous desire to control, Curtis says. They can also be more subject to peer pressure. So if they find themselves dating a popular person, for example, they might be more likely to excuse that person’s abusive behaviors, she says.

“When the behavior becomes more concerning, it can be really hard to get out of that relationship,” Curtis says.

For Petito, embarking on van life might have heightened her risk because it isolated her from others, Curtis adds.

The prevalence of intimate partner violence hits a peak in the 20s and declines over the adult lifespan, Sabina Low, an associate professor at Arizona State University’s T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics, tells A&E True Crime. Low was among researchers from the Oregon Social Learning Center who in 2017 published a 15-year study of young adults at risk that found intimate partner violence is most often bidirectional—meaning both partners engage in some form of violence.

The study, funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, examined relationships involving a total 323 couples or 646 young adults with an average age of 21.5. The results showed that 91 percent of couples participated in bidirectional intimate partner psychological violence, 71 percent in bidirectional physical violence, 66 percent in bidirectional sexual violence and 27 percent experienced bidirectional violence-related injuries.

“That’s not to say there isn’t unidirectional violence [where only one partner is engaged in violence]—it’s just a smaller percent of couples,” Low says.

However, the study doesn’t address which partner started the violence, and focused on a community sample that didn’t include many cases of severe violence.

Evaluating Risk Factors

Each person in a couple comes with their own developmental history, risk factors and personality, says Low, and the mix of all that creates a dynamic unique to each relationship. That dynamic can lead a couple to violence, give them the inability to deescalate a quarrel or even get them to the point of connecting through the conflict, she says. Individual risk factors can also determine whether people decide to stay in the relationship or leave, she adds.

“You have to consider both the risk factors that Brian [Laundrie] presents, and also the profile of Gabby [Petito] that, in some ways, makes her a target—or makes her vulnerable to staying with someone like him, or giving him multiple chances,” she says.

“This is not about blaming the victim,” she adds. “It’s more about understanding how assessing risk factors for both individuals gives you a more complete picture, versus only focusing on the perpetrator as we tend to do. Because then, you’re missing half of the story.”

Laws mandating an arrest in domestic violence cases started in the 1990s and spread across the country, Curtis says. Now, some states allow charging both partners, she says

Curtis and Low agree law enforcement must carefully analyze the situation with in-depth interviews and risk assessment for both partners before making an arrest. Arresting both people can be appropriate if both engaged in violence, Low says.

Curtis cautions against arresting victims who were violent to defend themselves. New York, for example, requires officers to determine, to the best of their ability, who was the primary aggressor, she says.

“Even in a relationship where you have a survivor who has hit back or punched back, it doesn’t negate there is a coercive-control domestic violence relationship where one person has control over the other,” she says.

People are always surprised to hear how prevalent intimate partner violence is among young people, Maureen Curtis, vice president of criminal programs for victims’ service agency Safe Horizon.

https://www.safehorizon.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Safe-Horizon-Flower-Logo_TransparentThumbnail-300x300.png
https://www.safehorizon.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Safe-Horizon-Flower-Logo_TransparentThumbnail-150x150.png
https://www.safehorizon.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Safe-Horizon-Flower-Logo_TransparentThumbnail.png
[72
92,1133
post-9694","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-safe-horizon-in-the-news","tag-domestic-violence","tag-intimate-partner-violence","issue-domestic-violence","issue-victims-of-other-abuse
Get Informed. With her partner at the time, she made a pact: they were going to save $10,000 each and then hit the road for a year, living out of their van and hitting 49 states.

It was fairly early in the evolution of the #vanlife influencer community on social media. At the time, there were few depictions of the lifestyle on Instagram: cozy, sun-drenched selfies in perfectly appointed backseats with nary a crumpled Doritos bag or empty soda bottle in sight; bright red buttes and cliffs framed by flawlessly filtered vistas. But Annie was drawn to the idea of total freedom, of seeing places she’d never been before, of not being tethered to a schedule or agenda. “It’s a lot less destination and trail-focused, but focused on the concept of living outside, living freely, not being tied to the 9 to 5, being tied to my body and mind,” she says.

Annie, whose name has been changed, says that she and her partner had been dating for about six months before they set off on the road together. The relationship was not going well; she says her partner exhibited verbally abusive, controlling behavior, constantly interrogating her about her past romantic relationships and preventing her from going out with certain people. Then it started to turn physical, she says: he would punch walls, back her into corners, or scream while she cowered beneath him. But she felt hopeful that living their shared dream together would bring about a shift. “We’d been working towards a big project for what felt like a really long time. I felt like I’d feel remorseful if I didn’t just try to get on the road and maybe things would change,” she says.

As Annie describes it, they didn’t. As they traveled throughout the United States, the abuse continued apace, Annie says. “There was more isolation. We went all over the country and we were in the middle of nowhere most of the time,” she says. “All my belongings were with me and stress was really high.” Because they were together in a small space 24/7, she had no ability to communicate with her family and friends what was going on. “I thought ‘Can I endure this for another 24 hours? Is this the day I can sneak away and leave and get a flight even though I have no car and any way to get anywhere?,'” she says.

Eventually, Annie says, she and her former partner got in a booze-and-jealousy-fueled argument, which culminated in him grabbing her by the throat. She says he later claimed he was trying to keep her quiet, so other campers wouldn’t hear her shouting. “I was scared and I was ashamed,” she says. “It was the most violent things had gotten at that point.”

Annie does not believe that her road trip with her then-partner caused or exacerbated the abuse. “It was already progressing over time anyways,” she says. “I think it was a form of isolation that he was able to use as a tactic.” Yet her experience reflects the darker side of the hyper-curated, Instagram-ready #vanlife couple aesthetic, in which the circumstances of the lifestyle — disconnection from one’s support system, social isolation, nomadism — create the perfect conditions for already-existing abuse to worsen. “This is a life of wanderlust,” says Travis Wild, a van life blogger who wrote a post on the subject of domestic abuse in the community in 2020. “But at the same time these are issues our community is facing and it won’t get any better by not talking about it.”

Domestic abuse within the van life community has gotten some attention with the disappearance and death of Gabby Petito, who with her boyfriend Brian Laundrie vlogged about their van life adventures on their YouTube channel, Nomadic Statik. Since her disappearance, details have emerged regarding Petito’s relationship with Laundrie, whom friends described as jealous and controlling. (Laundrie has disappeared and was thus unavailable to be reached for comment.)

Audio from a 911 call following a dispute the couple had in Moab, Utah supports the idea that the relationship was at the very least highly toxic, with one witness reporting that he had seen Laundrie slap Petito and another stating that the pair argued “aggressively.” Bodycam footage taken by police showed officers questioning Laundrie about scratches on his face, which he said were from Petito; Petito, for her part, seemed agitated in the footage, assuming blame for the entire incident.

On September 1st, Laundrie returned to Florida by himself, and on September 11, Petito’s family reported her missing. Petito’s remains were found in Wyoming on Sunday, and police are currently searching for Laundrie in Venice, Florida, where Laundrie last told his parents he was headed.

“Being in close contact with many people could lead to contentious relationships,” says Maureen Curtis, vice president of criminal justice programs at Safe Horizon, a national domestic violence hotline. “We saw it with Covid and the increase with physical violence, or family violence where we saw more reports of escalated violence between family members. The trend is “totally demoralizing and demeaning to all survivors, to all people, to everybody who believes all survivors should be treated compassionately and fairly,” she tells Rolling Stone. “To put that on TikTok in a joking way is insulting.”

While disturbing, the popularity of the trend reenacting Heard’s testimony is part and parcel with the general memeification of the Johnny Depp trial on the platform, much of which has been directed in support of Johnny Depp. The trial marks the second time Depp has sued over public allegations of physical and sexual abuse leveled by Heard; a 2020 U.K. trial which focused on the Sun’s characterization of Depp as a “wifebeater,” ruled against Depp, finding 12 out of 14 of the allegations that Heard made against him were proven to “the civil standard.”

Specific moments of Depp’s testimony have gone viral on the platform, with the #justiceforjohnnydepp hashtag amassing more than 9.7 billion views as of Monday morning. As Rolling Stone previously reported, one video showing a Starbucks with competing tip jars for Depp and Heard — with Depp’s full, while Heard’s remained empty – went massively viral on TikTok, and content creators are directly profiting off the trial by selling merch on Etsy and Instagram in support of Depp. And Depp appears to be appreciative of the support, if recent viral videos of fans congregating outside the courthouse begging him to sign merch are any indication.

The pro-Depp sentiment that has been percolating on the internet since before the start of the trial is “not surprising,” says Curtis. “When you have a celebrity, particularly one who’s as well-liked like Johnny Depp, accused [of violence], it makes it harder for a survivor to want to come forward, and to be believed,” she says. “People don’t want to believe a well-liked man [could] do things like this.”

The fervor over the trial has reached a fever pitch on TikTok in particular, due to the algorithm prioritizing content that’s likely to get more engagement, regardless of the impact the anti-Heard discourse may have on actual people who survive abuse. The antipathy for Heard and the sympathy for Depp may have the effect of dissuading future survivors from speaking out about abuse, Curtis tells Rolling Stone. “There’s no doubt this could lead to fewer survivors coming forward,” she says. “They don’t want to be put through what she is being put through.” She refers to the trend on TikTok as “just another way of silencing survivors.”

‘Demoralizing and Demeaning’: A Gross TikTok Trend Mocking Amber Heard is Going Viral
TikTok videos mocking Amber Heard’s testimony against Johnny Depp is demoralizing and demeaning to all survivors of domestic violence.
