{"id":9783,"date":"2022-08-31T11:18:39","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T15:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/?p=9783"},"modified":"2025-06-10T13:57:34","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T17:57:34","slug":"acs-expands-a-safe-way-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/safe-blog\/acs-expands-a-safe-way-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Administration For Children&#8217;s Services Expands &#8216;A Safe Way Forward&#8217; To Brooklyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Brooklyn Daily Eagle<br \/>\nBy Brooklyn Eagle Staff<br \/>\nAugust 29, 2022<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/site\/acs\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Administration for Children\u2019s Services<\/a> announced on Monday an expansion of the \u201cA Safe Way Forward\u201d program, which seeks to provide support to the survivors of domestic violence and intimate partner violence, along with the \u201cpersons causing harm\u201d and their children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Previously, the project offered services to families in The Bronx and Staten Island. The ACS is now partnering with three providers and will expand to serve families in Brooklyn through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercyfirst.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MercyFirst<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Other contractors partnering with the ACS through the expansion include <strong>Safe <\/strong><strong>Horizon in Staten Island and the Children\u2019s Aid Society<\/strong> location itself in The Bronx.\u201cIn our mission to protect children and support families, ACS and our partners are working to address the root causes of family violence while we help survivors and children stay safe. That\u2019s why \u2018A Safe Way Forward\u2019 provides services to survivors of intimate partner violence and the children in the household, including information about how to make an effective safety plan, as well as interventions for the persons causing harm so that they can work towards changing their behavior and end the cycle of violence,\u201d said Commissioner Jess Dannhauser.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2019,<strong> A Safe Way Forward<\/strong> was launched for specifically families receiving court-ordered supervision. According to the ACS, the program was launched over 12 months of research including interviews with over 100 national experts and close collaboration with the Mayor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The program offers case planning therapeutic services to the survivor, children and person causing harm. The person causing harm being involved, if safe to do so, provides them a greater opportunity to \u201clearn more about the triggers and how their behavior is impacting the family,\u201d according to the ACS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The goal of the program is <strong>to interrupt the intergenerational impact that <\/strong><strong>domestic violence can have on families<\/strong>, specifically to create behavior change and protect the survivor and children.
