Douglas sustained the injuries during her \u201ctoxic\u201d and violent relationship with her ex-fianc\u00e9 in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thank GOD! My ancestors, angels, and guides for pulling me through this Warzone alive!\u201d the Wife Of Creation CEO wrote in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt was Toxic, and<strong> it was dangerous not only for obvious reasons but also because to the outside world everything seemed fine<\/strong>.. but those closest to us knew! But didn\u2019t know how to help,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt got to a point where the abuse was regular behavior, and I would fight back pick up whatever I could to protect myself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Shia revealed that her ex-fianc\u00e9 knocked out 8-9 of her teeth in their last altercation. She included the gory image in her harrowing slideshow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Shia Douglas sends a message to domestic violence survivors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Further along in the lengthy caption, Douglas reflected on some of the reasons why she continued to accept the physical and emotional trauma from her former partner before things turned dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy undying loyalty and strong desire to create my own family had me accepting things I never should have, she wrote. \u201cI\u2019ve been <strong>punched, spat on, strangled, pushed to the ground<\/strong>. And been threatened with a \ud83d\udd2b\u2026 I look at these pictures and I hold grace and patience for the woman I was and everything she didn\u2019t know! I love her and thank her for her role in my journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before signing off, the wellness guru said that she didn\u2019t want her followers to see her as a \u201cvictim or a survivor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis is all apart of my story, my life and my journey\u2026This post is for any woman or man who has yet to truly recognize the power they possess, and finds themselves in a environment that is unhealthy, please know if they\u2019ve done it once they will do it again.. it is inevitable!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Black women experience domestic violence at a higher rate<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Shia\u2019s story is far too common in the Black community. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, <strong>more than 40 percent of Black women<\/strong> have experienced physical or sexual violence from their partner during a relationship. Sadly, more than half of Black adult female homicides are related to intimate partner violence. This is why<strong> Domestic Violence Awareness Month<\/strong> is so important. Guns are a serious threat on their own and when an abuser has access to a gun, domestic violence survivors are at much greater risk. According to the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) July 2003 via <a href=\"https:\/\/everytownresearch.org\/report\/the-impact-of-gun-violence-on-children-and-teens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Everytown<\/a>, domestic violence victims are five times more likely to be killed when guns are in reach.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9867\" src=\"http:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Guns-Children-Teens-Leading-Cause-of-Death_DVAM-2022.png\" alt=\"Guns Children Teens Leading Cause of Death\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/>\r\n\r\nAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics data compiled by <a href=\"https:\/\/everytownresearch.org\/report\/the-impact-of-gun-violence-on-children-and-teens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Everytown: The Impact of Gun Violence on Children and Teens,<\/a> guns are the leading cause of death for children and teens. Nearly 3 in 4 children and teens killed in mass shootings died in an incident connected to domestic violence. (<a href=\"https:\/\/everytownresearch.org\/maps\/mass-shootings-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Everytown: Mass Shootings in America<\/a>)\r\n\r\nGun violence does not have to be fatal to cause harm. Children living in homes where domestic violence is present are exposed to, or experience, higher rates of physical and sexual assault. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ojp.gov\/program\/programs\/cev#:~:text=Children%20are%20more%20likely%20to,et%20al.%2C%202009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DOJ, OJP<\/a>)\r\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 28px; color: #77278b;\">Facts: How guns are used to abuse domestic violence survivors and children<\/h2>\r\n<strong>Guns put survivors' lives in more danger.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n[gallery size=\"medium\" columns=\"2\" ids=\"9877,9878,9879,9880\"]\r\n\r\nSurvivors experience psychological terror when threatened with a gun. The person causing harm can threaten to shoot the survivor, a pet, or a person the victim cares about. In addition, they could clean, hold, or load a gun or even fire the gun during an argument.\r\n\r\n<strong>When domestic violence escalates because of gun violence, children can suffer the most.\u00a0<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9864 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.safehorizon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Children-Witness-Parent-Killed-with-Gun-Domestic-Violence-Infographic.png\" alt=\"Children who see their parent killed with a gun suffer severe PTSD, behavioral problems, and suicidal thoughts.\" width=\"494\" height=\"700\" \/>Children who see their parent killed with a gun suffer severe PTSD, behavioral problems, and suicidal thoughts. That fear, and the trauma it causes, can last for years, even after a survivor is physically safe.\r\n\r\nSometimes they have access to a gun because they are or were previously employed by law enforcement.
